U.K. COVID-19 variant detected in Riverside County
Riverside County health officials confirmed the first local case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 first discovered in the United Kingdom.
The case was reported to Riverside County health officials over the weekend, according to county Executive Office spokeswoman Brooke Federico. She did not specify the region in which the case originated, but did tell News Channel 3 that it was in the western part of Riverside County.
Federico added that there is only one confirmed case of the variant right now.
It was inevitable we would see this strain in Riverside County, and in our large population we will probably see others, county Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said. But it doesn t change the need for people to take precautions with facial coverings, social distancing and good hygiene. It works for other things and it works for this, too. ....

Riverside County lowers vaccine eligibility age to 70 as demand grows

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) Riverside County residents who are age 70 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at county-run clinics.
The county lowered the age eligibility from 75 after reviewing the number of appointments that were being made.
The newly available appointments are for the 3,400 slots at the 31 clinics in Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Beaumont, Menifee, Corona, Indio and Perris.
According to the Riverside University Health System, the county has received 241,750 Pfizer and Moderna SARS-Cov-2 vaccine doses, and roughly 91% of that stock has already been administered.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA For the second day in a row, Riverside County reported a record number of COVID-19 deaths, with the total exceeding 100 for the first time in the pandemic.
Meanwhile, residents scrambled to get vaccinated, quickly filling all available appointments at county clinics for the next week.
The Riverside University Health System reported 118 additional COVID deaths Friday, with many of them the result of delayed reporting. RUHS officials said one of those deaths occurred in October, while nearly one-third occurred in December and the remainder in the past two weeks. ....

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA Officials are gearing up for a massive vaccination program for more than two million county residents, according to a statement released Wednesday in Riverside County.
The county has deployed a team that is setting up several sites capable of vaccinating thousands of residents each day. The first of those sites for certain frontline workers and those 65 and older were announced Wednesday. (Click here to see which frontline workers are eligible.)
The county team is moving quickly to open more sites that will vaccinate even more of our residents, said Board Chair Karen Spiegel, Second District Supervisor. We know so many of our residents want the vaccine and we re working diligently to make that happen. ....
