Here's why California may not expand vaccine eligibility for another month

Here's why California may not expand vaccine eligibility for another month
KGO
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- There are increasing signs from state health officials that California won't move to the next tier of COVID vaccine eligibility for at least a month.
That means Californians over 50 or those working in some jobs deemed essential may have to wait weeks longer to get even a first dose of protection.
"It's too soon to tell," said Dr. Tomas Aragon, director of the California Department of Public Health. "We're going to look at supply, we have analysts who are projecting all of this out and we're going to be seeing how many people are getting vaccinated. That really helps determine when we'll make the next announcement."

COVID-19 Vaccine: 1st day of distribution at CVS, other drug store pharmacies in the Bay Area

But many have access to one too, possibly making it competitive to register.
"Are you patient?" we asked Marina Eisenzimmer of San Geronimo. "Not really," she says.
She is one of many qualified people hoping for a Walgreens or CVS appointment, who went on line and found a long list of stores fully booked on this first day. "I am frustrated. Everywhere else I have tried, the computers have crashed," she said.
That did not happen at CVS or Walgreens, though this may be a case where some clichés still have merit. "It's one of those things where the early bird catches the worm," said Logan Brookins outside a CVS pharmacy Rohnert Park.

California COVID-19 vaccine supply hits new low leading to appointment backlog

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- California's COVID-19 vaccine supply is hitting a new low as counties and providers work to get vaccinate those at high-risk.
Members of Kaiser Permanente and Stanford Healthcare tell ABC7 they're struggling to get appointments, despite meeting qualifications.
The big problem continues to be demand is far outweighing supply.
In Northern California, Kaiser has more than 270,000 members older than 75, but the healthcare system is only receiving an average of 25,000 doses per week, according to staff. That's only enough to cover 9 percent of the Northern California population eligible to receive it.

10 out of more than 4 million people vaccinated with Moderna vaccine had allergic reaction, CDC reports

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ten out of the more than four million people who got the first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine had a severe allergic reaction, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.
"In all the cases no one has died and it's been all treatable. Most of them occurred within the first 10 minutes," said Peter Chin-Hong, a UCSF Infectious Disease specialist.
Dr. Peter Chin-Hong says these cases are rare and added, "The allergic reaction are likely happening because the fatty bubble that incases the message and that messenger RNA vaccine might be an allergen to some people. But the good news is that it's not a lot of people," said Dr. Chin-Hong.
