Hancock City Manager Mary Babcock discussed the proposed dog park the city is planning to build near the Hancock Driving Park during the recent council meeting. She also addressed various grants the city will be working with over the course of the year.
HANCOCK The City Council held their meeting for May on Wednesday, dealing with everything from energy to the capital improvement plan.
Construction and improvement were the opening topics of discussion, as the city received a note from SEMCO Energy, informing the city and its residents that they will begin replacing gas lines in the next few months. ....

Hancock gets money to build technology park

City Manager Mary Babcock says up to 15 sites will be developed on a 40-acre plot of land. She says the project should draw talent from Michigan Tech and Finlandia Universities and increase economic opportunities in the region.
“Hopefully it will help grow our tax base,” she says. “That would be one of the byproducts of this. Hopefully it’ll create jobs that have a better living wage and attract people to this area.”   
The funding comes from the Economic Development Administration. Part of the money will be used to create a drainage system to prevent flooding like what happened on Father’s Day in 2018. ....

Hancock receives $2.7 M federal grant for technology park | News, Sports, Jobs

HANCOCK The city of Hancock has been awarded a $2.7 million grant from Economic Development Administration (EDA), to provide flood resilient infrastructure for a new a business and technology park that will house technology and technology-driven light manufacturing businesses.
According to a release from Gov. Gretchen Whimter’s office, the project will attract technological businesses through creation of an industrial park, stimulating the local economy. The project also invests in drainage infrastructure, preparing Hancock for future floods and making the community safer. The grant’s impact will aid recovery efforts from the 2018 flood, and attract businesses and private investment, which will create jobs and support the local economy. ....

Hancock Planning Commission discusses placemaking, neighborhood expansions | News, Sports, Jobs

City Manager Mary Babcock introduced the first subject, zoning.
“Over the last couple months, we have talked a lot about zoning, and one of the things that keeps coming up is placemaking.”
Babcock defined placemaking as, “making the city a more livable place to work, play and learn in, and creating different spots in the city that are welcoming. Making places that people care about and want to be in.”
Babcock mentioned placemaking involves bringing in businesses that attract people, which would bring in jobs and attract workers. The workers would “also have to have a place that people want to live to help us advance the community.” ....
