The High court has ordered the government to produce detained American national, Guy Smith and also explain why he has spent more than the mandatory 48 hours without appearing in court.
Justice Musa Ssekaana, the head of the High court Civil Division issued the orders following a successful application filed by Smith s lawyers from the Centre for Legal Aid led by Henry Byansi and his wife, Sharon Tusiime.
In their application, the applicants demanded that the government produces their client in court dead or alive and show cause why they have violated his right to liberty. Tusiime argued that security personnel invaded their home in Fort Portal city in western Uganda at around 2:00 am on March 21, 2021, and forcefully whisked her husband to Kampala.  ....

Rights Groups Decry Forced Conversions, Religious Killings in Pakistan

Human rights activists have reported a negative trend in Pakistan’s violations of religious freedom, insisting 2020 saw a marked increase in persecution of Christians and other religious minorities.
Cecil Chaudhry, executive director of the National Commission of Justice and Peace, told UCANews that incidents of forced conversions and marriages, hate speech against religious and sectarian minorities, and killings in the name of religion had all increased in Pakistan during 2020, according to a report published Monday.
Pakistan stood at number 5 on the recently released World Watch List, an index of Christian persecution in countries around the world, compiled by the Christian aid organization Open Doors. ....

Three young Christians in northeastern Pakistan have been charged with blasphemy after area Muslims alleged that pages of the Quran had been burned near some Christian homes to hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims, according to a report.
Police charged the three Christians, identified as Azeem Mehmood, Abbas Gulshan, and Irfan Saleem, from a village named Kotli Muhammad Sadique in Punjab Province’s Narowal district, on Dec. 30, the U.K.-based group Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement, known as CLAAS, learned recently. ....
