Poetry and translation are intertwined for Sawako Nakayasu

Tampa – For poet Sawako Nakayasu, 45, a multicultural upbringing is what forged her distinctive perspective of language and artistic expression. Nakayasu was born in Yokohama and moved to the United States with her family when she was six. Although she was raised mostly in the U.S., Nakayasu also lived in France and China. In 2002, Nakayasu, who was already a published poet by then, became interested in translation while earning her Master of Fine Arts at Brown University.
“The people important to me at the time, my professors Keith Waldrop, Rosmarie Waldrop, Forrest Gander were doing it,” she says, “and I understood intuitively that it was a fascinating kind of engagement with literature. At that time, I translated from French because that was my stronger second language and because we were told, as an exercise, to translate something that already had a translation.” ....

Over the last year and a half, since the publication of my first translated book, I’ve felt it necessary to preface my conversations with aspiring translators by telling them that I know less than they think. This isn’t necessarily a disadvantage and may be helpful in the end. I’ve lately been thinking of C.L.R. James, the Trinidadian Pan-Africanist whose belief in the creativity of “plain” people working democratically outside of capitalist enterprises has soothed me. Patty Sakal, an American Sign Language interpreter who translated updates about the coronavirus for deaf Hawaiians, died of complications related to Covid-19 on Jan. 15. She was 62.
Ms. Sakal, who lived in Honolulu, died at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in San Diego. She had gone to San Diego last month to visit one of her daughters, according to her sister, Lorna Mouton Riff. ....

In an interview following yesterday s announcement of the sale of Wattpad to Naver for more than $600 million, Allen Lau, co-founder and CEO of Wattpad, told
PW the acquisition was “a match made in heaven.” Lau emphasized the synergies between the two companies, particularly with Naver’s Webtoon subsidiary. “We are both multiplatform entertainment companies and are perfectly aligned. We offer online reading and writing, book publishing and relationships with television and film studios. Webtoon offers digital comics and animation.”
Lau sees opportunities in collaborating on a variety of projects and sharing IP, in particular helping to bring the work of Wattpad creators into new formats, including comics and animation, while producers of Manwha, as Korean comics are known, can move into prose published on Wattpad. The same goes for finding new reader ....
