‘Firms must surpass minimum standards to ensure safety’
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue cybersecurity norms for payment service providers (PSPs), following a series of data breaches faced by operators including Mobikwik and payment aggregator JusPay, a top RBI official said.
While the standards for fintech-driven payment services providers will be similar to cyber hygiene norms issued recently for banks and non-banking finance companies, the RBI is quite clear that firms will have to do more than observe the minimum standards to ensure safety as digital transactions gain further traction. ....

Upstox data breach: Upstox alerts users of data breach; says funds, securities remain safe

MUMBAI: After attacking Indian start-ups and unicorns, hackers have now started targeting stock broking firms. Upstox, India’s second largest broking firm in terms of number of active clients, on Sunday said its databases including contact details and KYC may have been breached. The discount brokerage firm said that it upgraded its security systems manifold recently, on the recommendations of a global cyber-security firm against a suspected data breach. It also has assured the clients that their funds and securities are protected and remain safe.
The steps were taken after it received emails claiming unauthorized access into its database. “These claims suggested that some contact data and KYC details may have been compromised from third-party data-warehouse systems,” the retail broking firm said in a statement on its website. ....

The database of the latest alleged leak includes details of roughly 5.5 lakh users from Afghanistan, 1.2 million from Australia, 3.8 million from Bangladesh, 8 million from Brazil, and 6.1 million from India.
Alon Gal the co-founder and CTO of cybersecurity firm Hudson Rock shared details of the leaked database on Twitter.
If someone had a Facebook account, their data had likely been leaked, he said.

The database was first leaked in 2019 and was sold on Telegram for $20 per search. Gal was the first to flag the leak.
