Houthi Mines Kill 348 Yemenis in 2020

A recently published report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) revealed that mines continue to pose a significant threat to the security and safety of all civilians in war-torn Yemen.
Without directly blaming Iran-backed Houthi militias, who are responsible for planting mines across the country, the report said that 348 Yemenis had perished in 2020 from the explosives.
The legitimate government accuses the Houthis of planting more than a million mines in areas they control.
Yemeni activists have criticized UN agencies for their unwarranted support for the Houthis in the form of assistance in mine clearance programs. They stressed that the militias are responsible for planting mines and should be held accountable. ....

Yemen: 4 April, 2021 - As Yemen enters its seventh year of conflict, and despite the continuous and notable efforts of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC) across the country, mine contamination continues to increase, posing a significant threat to the security and safety of all Yemenis.
Littered across the country, mine and unexploded ordnance contamination is a major risk of death and injury to civilians as 348 people perished in 2020. Iran says a newly declared US stance on the Yemen war can be a step towards correcting past mistakes provided that it is not a mere political maneuver, reiterating its support for any effort that will end support for aggressive powers.
“Ending the support for and stopping the sale of arms to the Saudi coalition, if not a political maneuver, could be a step towards rectifying past mistakes, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Saturday.
This per se would not solve the problem in Yemen, the official said, underlying the need for the lifting of the country’s air, sea, and land blockade, which has led to the deaths of thousands of Yemenis due to food and medicine shortages. ....

Reacting to the news of the US president’s decision to stop supporting the Saudi war on Yemen, Yemen’s Supreme Political Council said that Yemenis will not be fooled by mere US statements.
“We consider any move that does not end the siege and aggression against Yemen as just a formality and do not pay any attention to it,” Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a council member said via Twitter Friday morning.
“We are not those who are deceived by statements no matter how they are expressed,” al-Houthi noted. ....
