Can astronaut suits repel lunar dust? This team believes so

Can astronaut suits repel lunar dust? This team believes so
University team takes a look at the moon's ghastly, sticky blanket -- and how astronauts could keep it off.
When multiple talented engineers go into the same room (or Zoom call), awesome things can happen, especially when experts in other disciplines also pitch in. Case in point: engineers and designers recently collaborated on how to protect spacesuits from lunar dust.
Moon dust can be a big problem for astronauts. Image credits: NASA.
Moondust is unlike the light powdery stuff we’re used to seeing on Earth. Earthly dust is more “well-behaved” — on your average windowsill, it obeys eviction under a soft cloth. But lunar soil is abrasive and fine-grained, and those tiny grains make it much more problematic. It sticks to everything. It can clog machinery, scratch lenses, ruin an entire mission. The long-term effects of moondust exposure are even more dangerous.

Rittenhouse: ‘I hope this motivates people’
When people told Wheaton native Jeremiah Rittenhouse, “The sky is the limit,” he pushed even further.

Rittenhouse a Ph. D. student at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), is part of one of seven teams chosen by NASA to develop a technology to remove lunar dust from solar cells.
NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing (BIG) Idea Challenge brought both university students and space agency together to fight the damages lunar dust causes on solar cells. According to Missouri S&T News and Events, solar cells can be used to generate power to lunar landers, moon explorers and even inhabitants.

Student-Led Moon Dust Shield Team Named Finalist in NASA Competition

Student-Led Moon Dust Shield Team Named Finalist in NASA Competition
Moon dust, the fine, fluffy powder covering the moon, is the stuff of imagination, the subject of scientific inquiry, and potential building block for lunar colonies.
It is also a menace to exploration.
As astronauts walk across the moon, land spacecraft on its surface, drive lunar rovers around, or complete other astronaut tasks, they kick up the dust, and that is a problem because it can cause premature wear on mechanical parts, damage to seals, and may pose a health risk for the people breathing it in. Additionally, it has qualities that make it cling to nearly every available surface.
