A few days ago, The Rutgers University in Newark, NJ, put out a statement. It was a pledge of support for one of its faculty’s “academic freedom.” The statement also denounced “vile” attacks on her faculty. The faculty in question was Audrey Truschke, an Associate Professor of South Asian History.
One cannot overstate enough the importance of Rutgers’s statement. We are witnessing an unprecedented era of ‘cancel culture.’ Scores of teachers, journalists, authors, and other professionals are losing their jobs. New Delhi: Rutgers University in Newark, US has issued a statement expressing support for Audrey Trucshke, who teaches South Asian history there, after people from the Hindu right-wing wrote an open letter to the varsity “expressing concerns” over the views she expressed on Twitter. In addition to this open letter that was reportedly signed by more than 5,000 people, the historian was subjected to a vicious online campaign and a number of violent threats. ....

MU celebration brings Mary Lou Williams' jazz greatness to the fore

An email last week from the University of Missouri School of Music had me at the mere mention of an upcoming event centered on Mary Lou Williams, the late, iconic jazz pianist. To say Williams is a seminal figure in modern jazz is, well, beyond an understatement. She’s
that important and remains
that influential.
At 4 p.m. Thursday, the Middleton Center for Race, Citizenship, and Justice and the School of Music are co-sponsoring the Zoom gathering “Mary Lou Williams: Jazz Composer, Pianist, Activist.” The event features a pair of MU faculty, Stephanie Shonekan and Sam Griffith. (Full disclosure: Griffith is a “We Always Swing” Jazz Series board member.) Members of the MU Concert Jazz Band, who will examine Williams’ music the day before, are also slated to serve on the panel. ....
