Russian security forces rounded up more than 1,000 demonstrators on Wednesday as thousands of people in cities across the country rallied in support of jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny, according to OVD-Info, an independent monitoring group.
The unauthorized marches fell short of the 500,000 protesters that Navalny’s team had aimed to draw, but big crowds in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities has shown the dedication of his supporters, who are demanding that the hunger-striking Kremlin critic be released and allowed to receive independent medical care. ....

A team of doctors seeking to examine Russian opposition politician Aleksei Navalny has been turned away from the prison where he is being treated at an infirmary amid concerns his health is failing badly as he ends the third week of a hunger strike.
Anastasia Vasilyeva, Navalny s personal doctor and the head of the Alliance of Doctors union, said on April 20 the group of physicians came to the penitentiary and requested to see the Kremlin critic, only to wait several hours without success. ....

The United States warned Russia of “consequences” if jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny dies, deepening the conflict over the dissident who has already survived an alleged assassination attempt and is now engaged in the third week of a hunger strike.
Navalny’s supporters on Sunday called for demonstrations across Russia on April 21, to coincide with President Vladimir Putin’s state-of-the-nation address. Putin’s most outspoken critic has been imprisoned since March 11 at the notorious IK-2 prison camp about 60 miles from Moscow for breaking parole rules. He had gone to Germany to recover from a near-fatal chemical poisoning in Siberia that he and Western governments blamed on the Kremlin. Russia ....
