NPEP hosts prison abolition roundtable

NPEP Director Jennifer Lackey opened the event, which was co-sponsored by One Book One Northwestern.
“This roundtable series aims to open space for conversation on these critical topics and to bridge research, legal work, policy and community activism in addressing them,” Lackey said.
Maya Schenwar, editor in chief of Truthout, a publication focused on social justice issues, opened her talk by discussing the one-year anniversary of the death of her sister, who had been incarcerated.
Her sister, Keeley, was on probation when she died of an overdose. She had been forced into an abstinence-based drug program, which left her vulnerable, Schenwar said. Keeley died while hiding from the police, Schenwar said, because “that’s what you do so often when you are a criminalized drug user.” ....

PRISONERS | News | phillytrib.com

Relatives and allies of prison inmates demanded the release of special populations and further protection against COVID-19 at a candlelight vigil held in front of Gov. Tom Wolf’s local office Tuesday.
About 20 demonstrators gathered at the effort, organized by The Coalition to Abolish Death By Incarceration, holding candles and signs, including one that stated Wolf had “blood on his hands.”
“We are going to continue to advocate for the governor to exercise his reprieve power for vulnerable populations which are seniors, people with autoimmune diseases, and specifically for him to release Russell Shoats, a 77-year-old who tested positive for COVID and is battling stage 4 cancer,” said Robert Saleem Holbrook, Executive Director of the Abolitionist Law Center. “He is [preparing] for surgery. He’s been in prison for 50 years. We are [demanding] Governor Wolf release this prisoner to go home and spend his last time with his family.” ....

Philadelphia shootings: 8,500 people have been shot since 2015

One in an occasional series about Philadelphia’s unchecked gun violence.
Every trip outside the house for Jackee Nichols brings a new reminder of the pain.
Nichols is from a part of South Philadelphia that has been embroiled in a shooting conflict for as long as anyone can remember. In October 2018, that violence claimed her 15-year-old grandson. Police believe he was gunned down for living on the wrong block but, like most shootings in Philadelphia, no one has been charged in the crime.
Now Nichols faces the daily torment of living among the people she suspects killed her grandson, Rasul Benson, leaving trauma to resurface in unexpected moments. ....
