Jensen case remains strong, prosecutor argues, as Kenosha County judge maintains bond at $1.2 million

KENOSHA — The case against Mark Jensen remains strong despite a bar against his dead wife’s letter and messages implicating him appearing at trial, a prosecutor said Friday.
Jensen is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the 1998 death of his wife Julie, the state alleging Jensen poisoned her with antifreeze and then suffocated her at their Pleasant Prairie home.
Jensen was convicted in 2008, but his conviction was overturned on appeal. The conviction was reinstated without trial by Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman in 2017, then overturned on appeal again.
Jensen has maintained his innocence for more than two decades. At the original trial, his attorneys suggested that Julie Jensen committed suicide and framed her husband. ....

No bail reduction before new trial in 1998 antifreeze poisoning homicide

KENOSHA - Mark Jensen will get a new trial, but he won t be getting out of prison on bail to wait for it.
A judge on Friday denied a motion to reduce the existing $1.2 million bail for Jensen, who s been serving a life sentence since 2008 for a crime he s always insisted he didn t commit the fatal poisoning and suffocation of his wife in 1998.
In March, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Jensen deserved a new trial that would not allow prosecutors to introduce a letter Julie Jensen made or wrote before her death suggesting that if she died, her husband was responsible. His conviction, for the second time, has been vacated. ....

More than 19 years after he first appeared in court on charges that he murdered his wife, Jensen was — virtually — back in front of a judge Thursday after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in March that Jensen deserves a new trial and that a “voice from the grave” letter and incriminating statements from his wife Julie Jensen cannot be used by the prosecution.
Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman vacated Jensen’s conviction and reinstated his bond.
Jensen appeared through video conferencing from Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, where he has been imprisoned since 2008.
Jensen was originally charged in February 2002 for the death of his wife Julie in 1998. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2008, prosecutors convincing a jury during a six-week trial that Jensen poisoned his wife with antifreeze and then suffocating her at their Pleasant Prair ....

His most recent actions, a grievance filed with the Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation by an investigator working on Bell’s behalf against Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley, and a complaint to the Wisconsin Department of Justice for an investigation into “unidentified Wisconsin Department of Justice State Crime Lab DNA analyst(s) regarding their potentially false representations.”
Michael Bell Sr.
Both the grievance and the complaint are tied to one statement in a three-page letter Graveley wrote to Bell in 2017 after, at Bell’s request, Graveley looked at the investigation into Bell’s son’s shooting, which occurred 12 years before Graveley became DA. ....
