Robert Mangold and Sol LeWitt used to work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Not as curators or anything. They were security guards. If you went to see the Frank Lloyd Wright drawings there in the spring of ‘62, it would have been Mangold and LeWitt making sure you didn’t walk off with any of them. Lucy Lippard, who’d also worked there, in the library, called them the ‘Bowery Boys’ – Mangold and LeWitt and Robert Ryman. They all lived in these huge lofts out below Cooper Square in the Lower East Side. It was a pretty rundown area at the time. SEOUL
.- Marc Glimcher, President and CEO of Pace Gallery, today announced the gallery’s plans to open an expanded gallery space in Seoul, South Korea, occupying two floors of Le Beige Building in the Hannam-dong neighborhood. The new gallery will open on May 27, 2021 with an exhibition of new work by Sam Gilliam, marking the American octogenarian’s debut exhibition in Asia.
Pace opened in Seoul in 2017 as one of the first international galleries to launch a permanent space in the city and one of the first cultural organizations to establish itself in the Hannam-dong district. Eschewing the traditional Samcheong-dong and Gangnam areas, Pace’s presence in Hannam-dong contributed to its current reputation as an artistic neighborhood and hive of creativity. .-Maruani Mercier is presenting a group exhibition with a selection of eighteen artworks all executed in the same year, lending the presentation its title: 1986.
In the history of the United States, the year 1986 is remarkable for its major developments in science, technology and mass culture, marking a period of breakthrough and upheaval. IBM unveiled the very first laptop computer, the protocol for what would later become e-mail was designed, Halley s Comet became the first to be observed in detail by spacecraft and the Human Genome Project launched. At the same time, there emerged a growing distrust in these forms of progress and the governments who championed them, triggered by events such as the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and the escalating AIDS crisis.
