Companies that participate in a potential Pentagon program to conduct threat hunting across the defense industrial base should be protected from legal liability and be given additional financial or technical support to ensure small businesses aren’t crowded out, an industry group is arguing.
The Cyberspace Solarium Commission issued dozens of recommendations to policymakers last year, many of which made it into Congress’ annual defense authorization legislation. Malware tied to espionage campaign against defense industry

Researchers at Kasperksy have tied a piece of malware used by Lazarus Group last seen targeting security vulnerability researchers earlier this year to another campaign by the North Korean hacking group focused on pilfering sensitive data from defense contractors across 12 countries since 2020.
Kaspersky researchers Vyacheslav Kopeytsev and Seongsu Park write that the group first gained an initial foothold through spearphishing emails. Many referenced or played off the global COVID-19 pandemic, while other example emails appeared to mimic job postings for defense contractors. WASHINGTON – Twice in the last four years, the national security community warned that hacks through IT suppliers posed grave threats to defense and intelligence agencies. Last month, those warnings proved prescient after suspected Russian hackers infiltrated federal agencies through a contractor’s software.
While intelligence officials said Jan. 5 the hack is an espionage campaign, confirming Russia as the likely source, the two recent reports alerted the community that hackers could disrupt weapons systems by attacking through the supply chain. Those reports suggested the Pentagon must quickly develop methods to reduce risk from its suppliers. ....
