Sydney couple banned from baby's surrogate birth over Covid lockdown


A couple has been denied permission to be at the birth of their first child by a surrogate because of Sydney coronavirus lockdown.
Stephanie Dierich and Ryan Holman struggled long and hard to be parents, only to be told at the last minute they would miss out on the most important moment. 
Ms Dierich was diagnosed with cancer seven years ago which resulted in her being unable to carry a child, she told Today on Wednesday.

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic upended the conference experience for researchers around the globe as scientific societies canceled in-person meetings and scrambled to hold virtual events in their place with varying success. Now, as vaccines become more widely available, particularly in the United States, some of those societies are grappling with a new challenge: when and how to safely get conference attendees into the same room again while maintaining the accessibility and wide reach virtual meetings afford.
Many are opting to stay virtual. But this summer and fall, a handful of U.S. societies are taking the plunge and planning “hybrid” meetings, which will convene in a physical location and also allow for virtual participation. The Hills Shire Council runs a first of its kind worm farm in Australia

The Hills Shire Council is running a worm farm trial in an apartment complex in North Kellyville.
The ‘skip bin-sized’ worm farm is located in a carpark – just beneath the complex – and houses roughly 120,000 (30kg of) worms, which will produce both worm castings and worm tea for the building to use in their shared garden plots and on their balcony verandas.
The worm farm, supplied by Worms Downunder, is the first of its kind to be trialled in a residential apartment complex by any Council in Australia. Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said the trial will look at how residents living in apartments can reduce food waste from their red lidded bins. “A worm farm is fairly low maintenance, and it’s a great way to process food waste,” Mayor Byrne said. ....
