History lesson: Civil unrest in downtown Cincinnati was 20 years ago

On April 7, 2001, according to testimony in Hamilton County Municipal Court:
Two off-duty Cincinnati Police officers working late-night security at the Warehouse bar, 1313 Vine St., spotted 19-year-old Timothy Thomas on the street. They knew he was wanted on 14 outstanding warrants, most were traffic offenses. Thomas recognized one of the officers and ran.
“I’m chasing a Black man, about 6 feet tall, wearing a red bandana and an Indy 500 jacket, Officer David Damico radioed a dispatcher.
A dozen officers joined the chase down streets and alleys. Officer Stephen Roach, driving south on Republic Street, saw Thomas jumping a fence. He ran from his squad car and confronted Thomas in an alley behind 1224 Republic. ....

Soliciting Some Campaign Donations Could Be Illegal Under New Proposal

A proposal at Cincinnati City Hall would make it a misdemeanor for elected officials to solicit some campaign donations, specifically from developers or others with current city business.
Interim Council Member Steve Goodin says San Francisco and dozens of state legislatures have done the same.
If you are seeking business with the city in any form – a zoning variance, incentive package, whatever it may be – city council members, mayors, candidates, should not be able to solicit you for campaign contributions while that s going forward, Goodin said.
Goodin says he d like to ban the donations themselves putting responsibility on the donors as well but doing that could violate the First Amendment. He says this proposal gets to the heart of recent corruption issues at City Hall. According to investigators, all three council members indicted on federal charges last year asked developers for money. ....

Federal Judge Refuses To Dismiss Sittenfeld Corruption Charges

Courtesy of WCPO
A federal judge on Tuesday refused to dismiss corruption charges against suspended Cincinnati City Council Member P.G. Sittenfeld.
In a 43-page ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Douglass R. Cole batted away a motion filed last December by Sittenfeld s legal team asking to dismiss those charges.
Then-U.S. Attorney David DeVillers alleged in an indictment last November that Sittenfeld accepted $40,000 in checks from undercover FBI agents and a federal informant in exchange for favorable public policy action on a downtown development.
Sittenfeld s attorneys have contested several elements of the indictment and the way it was rolled out, saying that key quotes in recorded conversations between Sittenfeld and FBI agents were cherry picked. ....

CINCINNATI — Scandal, social unrest and a pandemic: 2020 will go down as one of the most challenging years to date, at least according to a few Cincinnati City Council members.
This is unlike any year any of us have gone through, obviously, said City Hall veteran David Mann.
Federal corruption charges, the coronavirus pandemic and a nationwide push for police reform all led to forced change and reflection among Cincinnati s community leaders and elected officials. ....
