TOKYO – U.S. military travelers returning to Japan should avoid downloading COVID-19 tracking applications or signing pledges to follow tracking procedures, according to a policy update Friday by Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo.
But don’t pick that hill to die on, the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Forces Japan said recently. If airport authorities insist that returning travelers download apps and sign a pledge, do so rather than spend time arguing the case. ....

TOKYO At U.S. bases across Japan, planners are arranging Super Bowl viewing parties they say are safe alternatives to small, private gatherings that have sparked several coronavirus clusters since November.

Health care providers, first responders for US Forces Korea receive coronavirus vaccine

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea An Army doctor was first among U.S. troops in South Korea to receive the Moderna vaccine against the coronavirus as inoculations here began Tuesday.
Army Lt. Col. Brian Cohee, a pulmonary and critical care physician, and about 20 other service members lined up for the shot at the Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital at Camp Humphreys.
“I consider it a huge privilege to be able to be the one to start it off here in Korea,” Cohee said. “I have taken care of a decent number of coronavirus patients and seen what it can do.” ....

US military in Japan counts 57 new coronavirus cases as end of 2020 nears

TOKYO –  Three U.S. military bases in Japan reported 57 new coronavirus cases as of 6 p.m. Wednesday as the year staggered to a close.
December has emerged as Japan’s worst month of the pandemic, far surpassing the country s previous records for new infections and deaths. A record high 1,110 people have died in Japan so far this month, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, and a record 74,824 new infections were identified.
In Tokyo, the virus produced another 944 newly infected people Wednesday, five shy of the city’s pandemic daily record of 949 set Saturday, according to public broadcaster NHK. Nearly 800 people per day in the city of 13.5 million have tested positive during the final week of December, according to Tokyo Metropolitan Government data. ....
