Watch now: Chauvin verdict source of hope for lasting change among Macon County leaders

The judge immediately revoked Chauvin s bail and he was remanded to jail in handcuffs.
To reach its guilty verdicts the jury had to find the actions of the disgraced former Minneapolis police officer were a “substantial causal factor” in Floyd’s death and that the use of such force was unreasonable.
Tony Taylor, of Decatur, talks about the conviction of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.
I hope this verdict sends a message to the politicians, I hope it sends a message to the whole world, added Taylor, who also hoped he would see no more cases of excessive use of force under color of authority. Just be fair with people, all people, he said. We ve got to change because we can t keep doing this, we can t afford to keep doing this to each other; it s crazy.   ....

Financial Crises
“Can Financial Crises Be Predicted” (January-February, page 10) cited banking crises in 42 countries from 1950 to 2016. The United States had 47 recessions from its inception to the present. From 1937 to 2020 there were 14 recessions and depressions within 83 years, but their frequency was reduced by governmental regulations lately. Now they are easier to predict: the last recession before the pandemic was 13 years ago, prior to that 7 years ago, before that 10 years ago, before that 9 years ago.
So, because of the U.S. government’s modern-day intervention, we can expect the Wall Street bankers to drive themselves into bankruptcy, so we, the people can bail them out with our tax money about every decade. Who said that financial crises are hard to predict? ....

Jana Riess: Top LDS leaders average age 90; those years of experience can be a blessing and a curse

Jana Riess: For Latter-day Saints, being led by old men can be a blessing and a curse
With an average age of 90, top church leaders are unlikely to be named in headlines about religious sex scandals. The cost of gerontocracy, though, is that they are also resistant to needed social change.

On Monday, I scanned the Religion News Service headlines as I do every day. There’s a growing controversy about the late evangelist Ravi Zacharias, as theevidence of his sexual misconduct mounts and his colleagues attempt to reconcile the godly minister and author they thought they knew with the sexual predator he apparently was. ....
