Virginia LGBTQ organizations fight back on lawsuits that threaten transgender student protections

RICHMOND — When Meredith’s son, who is transgender, started his freshman year at Henrico High School in 2017, Meredith emailed his teachers asking them to use his preferred name and pronouns. She said the teachers were more than willing to comply.
However, getting his name changed in the school s online system was a little more challenging, said Meredith, who asked that only her first name and her son s first initial E be used for privacy reasons. There were hiccups along the way — the school would not update his name in the system before it was legally changed. ....

The last year has seen the former capital of the Confederacy make some of its largest changes since Lee surrendered in Appomattox 156 years ago.

(CN) When you enter the county of Appomattox a giant sign welcomes you with a message: “Where our nation reunited.” It’s a message many argue looks good in giant letters but fails to accurately represent those who were oppressed at the hands of the losing side of the American Civil War which ended over 150 years ago this month. While the Confederacy might have surrendered in Appomattox, its legacy has long been ingrained in every part of Virginia.   ....

International Transgender Visibility Day is celebrated on the heels of Virginia issuing school guidelines that are inclusive of transgender students


Transgender and nonbinary students in Virginia will soon be able to use their pronouns and name of choice at school, according to new guidelines from the Virginia Department of Education that school districts must adopt come September.
VDOE’s model guidelines were issued in March, a month bookended annually by International Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, a day to celebrate the transgender community and raise awareness about the discrimination the community faces.
The commemoration was founded in 2009 by Rachel Crandall-Crocker, a psychotherapist and executive director of Transgender Michigan, who said in a Wednesday column for the online LGBTQ magazine “Them” that she wanted the community to have more than the Transgender Day of Remembrance, observed annually on Nov. 20. ....
