This was all thanks to an article about incoming National MP Harete Hipango on
Newsroom, which cited several National MPs saying unkind things about Hipango – a social conservative known to be very close to Collins. Hipango is replacing Nick Smith after Smith’s very odd exit from Parliament over a “leak” that never seems to have happened, an exit many suspect Collins had a hand in. The story about Hipango was far from friendly and is not the kind of welcome anyone would want for a job, but it wasn’t exactly earth-shattering either. Yet Collins treated it as such, calling a late-night caucus session together and challenging Muller, after it became clear he was one of the sources for the story. Muller was threatened with expulsion from the caucus, a nuclear option for someone who has dedicated much of his adult life to this party, but instead agreed to announce that he would retire at the election.
