Ravens' season ends with Jackson in locker room, 17-3 loss

A season in which the Baltimore Ravens overcame a long list of obstacles to reach the playoffs ended with their star quarterback stuck in the locker room during the fourth quarter and the rest of the team shuffling off the field to join him after a disheartening 17-3 defeat. The Ravens and Lamar Jackson were stymied for the much of Saturday night by a hustling, relentless Buffalo defense. Then, the biggest miscue on a night of missteps for the Ravens effectively put an end to an otherwise memorable season.

J K. Thank you for your time today. Appreciate this. Take me back a little bit, too. Draft day you were sitting there second round thinking. Wait a second. Why am I still here? I know the Ravens were thrilled, but in Baltimore will tell you nobody thought are running back in the second round was coming. Can you take us through that a little bit? And what it meant to you to end up in Baltimore? Yeah. So, I mean, the more teams that kept passing bottles like, what is going on right now, you know? And then, uh, I got a call from a Baltimore Maryland number, and I was like, What? What I didn't like. I didn't think I didn't think of it like it didn't registered fast like that. It was the Baltimore Ravens, like, and then I thought about it was like and then I saw I answered the phone. It was It was it was Mr Eric, and it was It was like it was I was still a little upset about, like everything though, So I wasn't as excited at the moment. But then when I sat and thought about I was like you know, it's a great great team going to great organization. And so I was. I was thrilled to be a part of it. I'm glad they gave me a chance and you get to play with Lamar Jackson. And it's just, you know, obviously you did a lot of, you know, shotgun pistol zone, read stuff in college. But I mean to do it with someone like him. You can't. I mean, e you don't know until you know, right? And so you take me through kind of the beginning of that developing in that relationship just on the field. And what was that like? Is again? He's a unicorn. He's so special. Mhm. So, yes, it all started in a off season. You know, before we didn't even got to Baltimore because I was in South Florida and, of course, he was in South Florida. And so we linked up Thio, you know, throw some routes and just do things together. And, you know, it was at that moment I knew that it was gonna be a special moment. You know, this year because he's such a special guy, he has unbelievable talent, you know, he's a leader you know. So I'm glad I get to play with him. One thing I'm curious about and I think certainly for fans you're watching it. It looks like every time there's that read option and Lamar's deciding whether or not to give it to you or whether or not to keep it, it looks like a recipe for disaster. How do you guys manage not to screw that up when it seems that that would be so easy? What? What? What do you the technical? How do you do that? How do you avoid How do you know when they're just not ripped out of his hands or one? How does that work? Yes, So I mean, we got we have a good chemistry, you know? He's like, he's like a good friend of mine. So I think that carries on into that play, you know? So that's important for that. Yeah, And then, you know, we practice at it and you know, it just something that's just we're blessed that we could do and not, you know, mess up, you know, so hopefully we don't mess it up, you know, knock on wood. But the chemistry between us and It's not what we want to do, and that helps a lot. But on that play, are you always trying to grab the ball and then it's up to him Or like, how does How does this work? How can you explain that for the fans that don't make E. I don't understand it very well, either. Yes, always driven by him, you know, it's all his decision. I'm just feeling it. I'm just feeling it. And once I feel like he's giving it to me, then I clamp down on it. And then once I feel like he he's not gonna give it to me. He pulls it, you know? So it's all on him like it's not all on him, but it's his decision for sure, and it certainly has worked this year. I mean, your rookie campaign leading and all NFL running backs at just over six yards per carry. You get nine touchdowns, you know, setting a Ravens team record for rookies. Um, I mean, it is Is this kind of what you imagine? A vision? It could be, Yeah. Coming, coming in. I was when I when I drafted me, you know, because I'm a hard working person. So coming in, I was like, you know, I want to go in there and I wanna be legendary. I wanna be one of the, you know, wanna be one of the great, you know, in the Rookie year, you know, because that's that's my expectation is my standard that I hope for myself. But at the beginning of the year didn't go that way. It was process. It was much of a process. So I had to learn patience. And I had to learn all this, this new stuff that was, like, foreign to me, you know? So at the beginning of season was going on, I did not envision any of this stuff going on right now that I did that I've done, you know? So I just kept working hard. And next thing you know, it was like like I scored like, six times, and I was in a row each week and I didn't even notice it. I was just playing. I was just playing like I wouldn't worry about any of that stuff. The next thing you know, the record started coming, so it was just like, No, I mean when I first got here. I visited Banana. That vision went away for a little bit. It just back came back. But now it's back. What is interesting, though? I mean in this offense, because while it is the most prolific rushing offense in the NFL, it's not centered on one person. It's always gonna be basically a three headed attack. And knowing that you're you, you're not gonna get the 300 carriage. Ah, year. You know, the possibility that have those monster seasons probably doesn't exist in this offense. Is that okay with you? Yeah, but I just wanna win. I just wanna win a Super Bowl. That's the only thing on my mind, the stats and all the stuff that will come. I just want to win a Super Bowl. That's the most important thing to me. Next step to That's the Bills. What kind of challenges do they present for you Saturday night and obviously being a Ohio State guy, you're familiar with cold and maybe a little bit of snow? Maybe an advantage for you there? Yeah, So that team is they're great. They play hard, play discipline there. It's gonna be a tough challenge for sure. But it's playoff football, you know, in the second round to be that, to be exact, you know. So stakes are high teams teams are trying to play. They're trying to get to Super Bowl as well, you know? So it'll be a tough challenge, you know? And that's what I can't. That's what I wanna do. I wanna play in games like that. I wanna play intelligent games, you know, for for all the marbles, you know, so it'll be great. Ah, little bit away from football. What? Throughout that, You know, we're 10 months into this pandemic. What do you miss doing? What do you miss the most? Right now? I'm just going to the movies move. That was like one of my things to do. Like I like going to watch horror movies and movie theater like That's fun thing to me, you know? And e haven't been able to travel, you know. So hopefully you know, I'll be able to do that sooner or later, you know, because I like traveling and, you know, just you forget about I mean, you you take, you know, big gatherings for granted. We had it. Now it's like, Oh, man, you can't really do that anymore. So I miss all that stuff. But I'm still I like learning new things. So even though it's weird, uh, I find these years are these moments like pretty cool, you know, to be living through it, You know, even though it's not a good thing, I hope everyone's safe and all that, but it's kind of interesting. Thio go through something like this, you know? Oh, it's historic, there's no doubt about. I mean, we're living through moments in history now that are gonna be in the books for 100 years. We'll be talking about 2020 you know, and so many different fronts. You know, not just with the pandemic, but politically, there's just there's so much going on. Um, last thing I have for you then J. K. What makes you l o l What makes me l o l j k l o l ah. Lot of things. I laugh a lot, you know? So I do. I laugh a lot. So I mean, just, you know, people are funny if you just sit and watch people or things are, you know, animals. Things like that is pretty funny. Like that's just me. Pretty much everything makes me Hello. I'm pretty happy guy to be living. Who makes you laugh the most? So in that locker room. Oh, in the locker room. Whoa. That's a tough When, uh, Marcus Peters is pretty funny. Lamar is pretty funny. Nick boils funny. There's a lot of funny guys in the locker room. Now, that's hard. When I had to think about that one. Okay, We'll get back to you on that one. Hey, thank thank you. So much for your time. Stay healthy and best of luck to you in Buffalo. Yes, sir. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. Mhm.

Jackson, who attended the University of Louisville, donated $25,000 to Blessings in a Backpack in 2018, a sum that was enough to feed 250 children for an entire year, according to the NFL.In a post on Reddit, "Here's Lamar Jackson's favorite charity," Bills fans spread the word and made donations. In a tweet Sunday morning, Blessings in a Backpack thanked #BillsMafia for their support in honor of Jackson. The NFL reports Bills fans have donated to a charity of a player's preference in the past. In January 2018, Buffalo fans raised more than $415,000 for the Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation after then-Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd to knock the Ravens out of playoff contention and send the Bills to the playoffs for the first time in 18 years. This past season, Bills quarterback Josh Allen played one day after his grandmother's death in November, and Bills fans began donating in $17 increments (Allen's number) to the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo in her name -- more than $1 million has since been raised, and a wing in the hospital has named in Allen's grandmother's honor, the NFL reports.

Divisional Round Predictions

Divisional Round Predictions
I can't wait to watch NFL football this weekend! Here are my picks for the Divisional round of the NFL Playoffs.
Last weekends "Super" Wild Card weekend was certainly super! There were upset wins with the Rams over Seattle, and the Browns over the Steelers, I also predicted the Bears to upset the Saints...I know I picked with my heart not my brain...Overall I was 3-3 last weekend because of those three games. But now we are down to the final 8 teams and I feel good about going 4-0 this weekend, here are my picks.

So, Matt, when it comes to playing for the game, that's gonna put you in the A F. C championship, it helps to have some experience. You have that, but there's also something about chemistry. You know, the Ravens team that you were a part of that? What? The Super Bowl? 47 didn't have chemistry in December. But, man, did you have it in January as a player? When do you sense that? I don't know. If I don't know If you ever if you sense it like oh, yes, you know, we just flip the switch here. We g o I mean, it's it's gradual, right? Its's gradual. For us, it was beating the Colts. The first round was was a good win, but then beating Denver and Denver. Then it was like, Ok, now, now it feels like this could be something. And, uh, and and also to when you get to that, I think when you get beyond the first round of the playoffs, you can you can actually see and touch the Super Bowl like like he's. It's not that far away. Whereas when you go in the first round of playoffs, you just get down with the regular season. Okay, now we're in the playoffs. But you know you don't really have time to process or anything, and you're kind of just tryingto tryingto survive and and and get your mind right for this the second season. So So it's gradual, but there's certainly I mean, I follow the Ravens not as closely as you do, but pretty closely. And there's There's a lot of indicators that say that. You know, this team is hitting its stride just at the right time. And one of those indicators is the play of Lamar Jackson. Now you you block for a guy who at any point, you know where he waas. You knew Joe Flacco was in the pocket. How challenging it is for the Ravens offensive lineman to not really know where Lamar might be on any given point in any given play. Well, I mean, it was nice to job or cement shoes, and he wasn't going anywhere in the pocket. But, uh, you know, for for someone like Lamar Jackson who let me just say something mean I'm a fan, Jerry, I'm just a football fan. Now that's all I am. I love watching this guy and his his skill set and athleticism and all those things is like nothing we've ever seen in this league before. So maybe he's not always where he's supposed to be or where you think he's gonna be. But that's normally okay, that's that's all right. And especially if, as alignment, let's say you don't quite block your guy, you're pretty confident Lamar's gonna bail you out. And so so you just go with it. I would liken it to when I blocked for Adrian Peterson. Um, you know, we're running back, there's running plays and they're designed to hit certain holes. You had no idea where Adrian Peterson was gonna hit the hole at, but that's okay. And sometimes he was gonna be wrong. But a lot of times he was gonna be right. When you look at the run game the Ravens have put together this year, I mean 39 straight regular season games rushing for more than 100 yards, second longest streak of its kind, ever. And you could say, OK, that's momentum. They've got their system in place. But look, they lost their best blocking tight end and Nick Boyle, They lost one of the best left tackles in the league and Ronnie Stanley. And yet they've continued that running rhythm as an offensive lineman. How is that possible? Uh, it's possible because e think I think it's because because of harbors, because hearts he doesn't ever use injuries as excuses and whether it's Ozzie or Eric DeCosta when they build their team, they have certain kind of guys in mind to be Ravens. It's not just about. Do you have enough talent? They also have to be the Ravens kind of guy to be able to play like a Ravens, as John usedto always talk about. I'm sure he still does talk about, and so you know it doesn't matter who's in there. The system is not designed for for a specific person. Um, this is This is how the Ravens play offense. This is how the Ravens play defense and the standard is the same regardless of who is in there. I know you say you're just a fan now, but you're a fan who has Super Bowl experience and literally the point of attack in the game. So as you watch this game with the Bills begin to unfold. What of the tells you look for in the first quarter? The first half to sense that, Yes, this is the Ravens game. I mean, obviously the running game is always key for for this offense. Now, I think what's very encouraging as a Ravens fan is you know, last week it wasn't there early. But you know, the Ravens aren't going to abandon the Run e unless they get down by three or four scores. They're always going to run the football. And then you sell Lamar make a play, and that just It just seemed to change the whole, the whole feeling, the whole sense of the game. And so you have to. You have to stay at it. But you know, Buffalo is a, uh, their defense. They're not super complicated what they do, but they play fast. They play hard. I know Leslie Frazier Well, you know he's that he's at Tampa to guy. He's got his system and it's really predicated on just being where you're supposed to be and and given great effort and their defense flies around, so I think they have a little bit more speed as a whole on defense. than Tennessee, so that will be interesting to see. And then offensively, you know, Buffalo's Buffalo's good with not running the ball a lot. I think they really trust Josh Allen now. I think, whether they handed off or whether they throw swing passes, thio their backs to Singletary, you know those air, just long handoffs there. They're fine with that. And so I think there's gonna be a lot of stress put on the Ravens past defense, and it's gonna be really important to get a pass rush this week. It was a little surprised last week. I felt like it took. It, took a while for the pass rush to get going. I think you're gonna have toe get Josh Allen off his spot. And yes, he's athletic and he can run around and, you know, playground it and make plays. But I think if you let him sit back there, they're pretty talented. Receiving core, tight end running backs that can catch the ball. I think the Ravens would be in trouble. One of the luxuries of being a fan is that you can get involved in the game in a different level on a Super Squares is a big part of that for you. Tell me the journey that got you involved with Super Squares and share with us. Exactly what that means to fans. Yeah. I mean, you know, I was like, I started off as a fan, right? I'm just a fan that just happened to be fortunate enough to play 15 years in the NFL. But being on the other side of it now, it's like you're fans. Fans really are the energy of sports, and I think we found that out this year without fans in the stands, even watching on TV, it just feels different. And, you know, fans put up with a lot. They spend a lot of money. They spend a lot of time. And other than being a fan of the game, they don't they don't get a lot back. So I was trying to think of How can we? How can we reward fans for for loving sports and for watching sports and for paying attention and so helped launch this app called Super Squares, which is that old football squares game that everybody plays that Super Bowl parties? It's It's like that on steroids. It's a lot more fun. There's there's a lot more going on. We have predictions, numbers change every quarter and it's free to play and we have massive prizes. We've already given out over a quarter million dollars in prizes this year. We have another 400,000 between now and the Super Bowl and we have a $2 million jackpot. It's a free app and it's it's free to play takes two minutes before kicked off and that's it and it's a lot of fun and so I think he has. Fans were always looking for that, that adrenaline. You know what else? Especially if our team is not in the playoffs. What else can can can get me lost in this game. I think that's why we all love sports because we just want to get caught up in the action and I think superstores does that and because it is a Squares game, you don't have to wait for the last two minutes to really think okay, which ways is gonna go? You can win throughout and take it every every quarter you have. You have sets of numbers and you get you get points for each quarter and so you never stuck with bad numbers. And really, in today's NFL, there are no bad numbers the way these kickers air missing kicks and coaches going for two every every every numbers, every numbers in play. Where can our viewers find Maura about Super Squares? Our website, Super Square's dot com? Or just just go to the APP store and download the free app. You know, we're just We're just all about rewarding fans for watching football and for for being fans. Believe me, after a long year away from the stadium and the fans will really appreciate it. Just like we will really appreciate seeing the fans hopefully next season back in Empathy Bank Stadium and throughout the league. Absolutely. And I saw I saw because the Vikings already planning for next season, the Vikings air playing at Ravens Stadium next year. So I think I think my wife would be taking a trip so hopefully, hopefully they're allowing people in the stadium by then. They better be well, we certainly look forward to see you then, Matt. Great visiting with you and enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Thanks, Jerry. I was great to see you. Mhm
