Efforts to transform the company don’t end there. It has renewed its attempts to compete better online with the likes of Next by putting its digital operations under the control of a new unit, MS2. The unit has the autonomy and clout within the organisation to act more like a “pure play” online retailer and less as an adjunct to the store estate – but is still able to use the shops as logistical support for the dispatch of online orders, supplementing its dedicated distribution centres, for click and collect and for the receipt of returns. The last time Marks & Spencer proposed knocking down its flagship store at Marble Arch on London’s Oxford Street in 2004 was the beginning of the end for the management team of Roger Holmes and Luc Vandevelde. As the shares sank, the M&S old guard took to the barricades. Philip Green launched his bid and Stuart Rose and City veteran Paul Myners were drafted in to see off the Arcadia and BHS tycoon. Rose, an M&S veteran, ditched the Holmes plan and went on to restore the firm’s reputation by taking profits back up to £1billion. Bally Vaughn Back in the day, Bally Vaughn, an apartment complex on Washington Street, was the place to be. It was one of the nicer apartment complexes in town, recalls former Ward 8 Ald. Kris Theilen. When I got out of college in 1995, Bally Vaughn was right up there with Chatham Hills and other apartments that young people wanted to live in. No more. Built in the 1960s, Bally Vaughn since has been marked by crime, loud parties, complaints to police and chain-link fence, which went up after the complex shut down seven years ago. Vacant ever since, Bally Vaughn went into foreclosure before being sold at auction in 2017 to a Florida owner who vows better things. ....
