Pamplin Media Group - Explosive charges demolish defunct Newberg paper mill

Explosive charges demolish defunct Newberg paper mill
Thunderous explosion marks continued work to demolish and scrap the former newsprint fabrication plant.
On May 5, near noon, Newberg was rocked by a booming sound emanating from south of the city. Dogs barked, car alarms blared and social media sites were sent into a frenzy, but in the end it was just another indicator that a historic local landmark s days are numbered.
The manmade thunder, it was later revealed, came about when a contractor set off explosive charges in one of the buildings that made up the former WestRock paper mill sandwiched between Wynooski, 11th and River streets and the Willamette River. Community Development Director Doug Rux said the explosives were placed on the legs of one of the mill s tall tower buildings; when detonated, the building was destabilized and came crashing to the ground. ....

County ends emergency declaration

March 2, 2021
County ends emergency declaration
Commissioners ended the county’s pandemic emergency declaration on Thursday, saying they don’t believe the situation can still be considered an emergency since the county has had a year to determine how to operate under pandemic conditions.
The emergency declaration was tied to certain county actions. The one that most concerned staff and commissioners was a provision allowing employees to donate their vacation time to colleagues suffering hardship from the extended school shutdown.
Last year, commissioners rejected authorizing extra leave for employees affected by having to supervise remote schooling.
In order to let employees continue donating leave to one another for school-related reasons, commissioners tied the authorization to the governor’s statewide emergency declaration, instead. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Mill demolition underway

Mill demolition underway
Demolition of Newberg s historic paper mill has begun.
Millions of pounds of steel, aluminum and other metals will be harvested from the site and sold as scrap as the company that purchased the facility begins the monumental task of disassembling the mill and freeing up the land for development.
Commercial Development Co. Inc., the St. Louis, Missouri-based company that purchased the mill from WestRock, began auctioning off heavy equipment, steam-generating machinery and other items last fall.
Demolition of the mill will continue until the site is cleared, then a subsidiary of the company will begin what is expected to be a heavy environmental cleanup before the land can be developed for alternative uses. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Feb. 3 letters to the editor

The Newberg Graphic s readers have a lot to say about the Yamhelas Westsider Trail this week.
Yamhelas Westsider Trail would be a boon to the county
To the editor:
We are Newberg residents and greatly hopeful for the Yamhelas Westsider Trail. We have three young children and enjoy biking and walking as a way to get out and about. With the current COVID rules in place, having places to do so is now more important than ever.
There are few areas in the local vicinity for longer walking/biking adventures (beyond city parks). We visit Champoeg often, but variety adds greatly to life. And that s it. In the local area, Champoeg is our longer biking option, short of having our 3-year-old ride down the highway. I am hoping I am simply ignorant of others, but outside of Champoeg we must travel. It would be great to have another trail, for family biking, in the local area and within a short drive. ....
