In what Variety labeled an Oscar diversity record, nine actors of color were nominated this year for Academy Awards.
The milestone presented a hopeful contrast to 2016, when all 20 acting nominees were white, a situation that sparked the critical social media hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
But Dr. Frederick W. Gooding Jr., an author and professor at Texas Christian University, cautions that achieving meaningful diversity in the acting categories may have more to do with the quality of roles than with the quantity of nominations.
What does it tell us if the Black women winning Academy Awards 70 years apart are still playing maids? he asked, citing the Oscar-recognized performances of Hattie McDaniel in Gone With the Wind (1939) and Octavia Spencer in The Help (2011). ....

A good start would be the contribution by James McKenzie to our 2017 issue celebrating the Thomas McGrath centennial. McKenzie was director of the University of North Dakota’s Writers Conference starting in 1997, and in this article, he recalls the arrival of the Beats on UND’s campus almost 25 years earlier, in 1974, and their interaction with one another and with Tom McGrath. Back in the very early 1980s I was a student at London’s South Bank Polytechnic studying for a degree in what would now be called Industrial Design. As part of my materials science module, I and my fellow students were given a presentation by a company that was developing applications for a new and immensely strong composite material: carbon fibre. Listening to the presentation with my bass player hat on, it occurred to me that carbon fibre could potentially be used to make a guitar neck, so I decided there and then that my final project on the degree course would be a bass with carbon fibre neck. Once I got into the project, though, I hit a snag, in that it was clearly going to be awkward to integrate a headstock at the end of the neck in moulded carbon fibre. While brainstorming the problem, one of my design lecturers asked why the tuning machines had to be at the neck end of the bass ....
