The world these days is so blasè about the destruction of democracy that no one even thinks it worthy of comment that an important free country such as Italy has not had an elected prime minister since the last one, Silvio Berlusconi, was forced to resign in 2011 during the Eurozone crisis after a palace coup orchestrated by Brussels, Berlin and Paris.
That is ten years without a prime minister chosen by the Italian people at the ballot box in a general election. The electoral system, currently a hybrid of first past the post and proportional representation, is partly to blame. But the real reason is the Italians. They seem anthropologically incapable of giving enough votes to form a government, even to a coalition of parties let alone one single party. ....

Italy’s new government, led by former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, will be sworn in on Saturday, ending weeks of political turmoil.
Draghi, 73, announced his cabinet, which contains a mix of political and technocratic ministers, to president Sergio Mattarella on Friday.
Some roles were reconfirmed, such as Luigi Di Maio as foreign minister, Roberto Speranza as health minister, Luciana Lamorgese as interior minister and Dario Franceschini as culture minister.
The economy ministry has gone to Daniele Franco, the current director-general of the Bank of Italy, and the justice ministry to Marta Cartabia, who until last September was president of the Constitutional Court. ....

Auburn University’s College of Human Sciences has a connection to “Bernini and the Roman Baroque: Masterpieces from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia,” one of the new exhibitions featured at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art when it re-opens for the semester on Feb. 9.

CAPZA, an independent management company and leading player in private investment in European SMEs, has appointed Stefano Zavattaro as head of its Italian branch. 
Zavattaro, Partner and Country Manager, will be responsible for CAPZA s investments in Italian SMEs and will support the transalpine development projects of CAPZA s French, Spanish and German portfolio companies.
Zavattaro has held various positions throughout his career. After graduating in Economics from Rome’s Sapienza University and specializing in Finance at the London Business School in London, he worked as a manager for the multinational General Electric where he participated in numerous M&A and private equity transactions within the GE Capital division. He was then chosen by the French investor Siparex to launch their Italian private equity activities before becoming head of the Private Equity division of ....
