Efforts to repeal a 2019 state law banning single-use plastic shopping bags suffered a blow Wednesday when the Legislature’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee voted 8-3 to keep the ban in place.

The law originally was scheduled to take effect on Earth Day, April 22, 2020, but changes in consumer demand caused by the pandemic as well as disruptions in obtaining replacement materials would have made the ban difficult to enforce, state DEP officials said at the time. ....

MACHIASPORT A new, smaller work-release facility is being built at the site of a prison that closed over the objections by the local community in Down East Maine.

Governor Janet Mills finally caved to pressure from business groups last week when she proposed an $82 million tax break on federal relief companies received during the pandemic. Under federal law, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans are not subject to a federal tax, but they are taxed under state law and business groups have been calling on the Mills administration to conform to the federal tax law. ....

Salvation Army to hold Kettle Blitz Day
LEWISTON The Salvation Army will hold a Kettle Blitz Day throughout northern New England on Thursday, Dec. 17. Salvation Army members will be at the Hobby Lobby in Auburn and Walmart in Brunswick.
The Divisional Kettle Blitz is a one-day competition among Salvation Army corps in hopes to increase donations, since the division is 48% behind the goal compared to last year’s income at this time.
In addition to giving directly to the red kettle, The Salvation Army has provided other options to donate this year: Give by texting “KETTLE” to 91999; Virtual Red Kettle, RescueChristmas.org; ask Amazon Alexa; or digitally with Apple Pay or Google Pay at any Salvation Army kettle. ....
