The Chihuahuan Desert in the Guadalupe Mountains of southern New Mexico is one place where sensitive public lands are being drilled for oil.
At 4.3 miles long, Parks Ranch Cave in southeastern New Mexico is the second longest gypsum cave in the Western Hemisphere. The cave and its multiple branches are among 550 that crisscross a fragile, sinkhole-prone geologic region renowned for Carlsbad Caverns.
Standing in the inky depths of Parks Ranch, I cannot see my hands. The air is a comfortable 52 degrees Fahrenheit, 40 degrees cooler than the Chihuahuan Desert 30 feet above. The quiet is so complete, I want to bottle it and take it home with me to enjoy later. ....

A local family is pushing the National Park Service for accountability, after a ranger fatally shot their son during a March traffic stop.
Montrose native Charles “Gage” Lorentz was 25. He was headed home from Texas on March 21, and was to stop at Carlsbad Caverns National Park to meet a friend. There, he was pulled over by a park ranger. Video footage obtained by KOBTV in New Mexico shows part of the encounter between Lorentz and the ranger, identified as Robert Mitchell. The encounter ends with Lorentz being shot twice, once in the chest. ....

Family sues park service and New Mexico ranger over Montrose man's death in March | Local News Stories


The family of a Montrose man who was fatally shot by a park ranger at Carlsbad Caverns National Park earlier this year is suing the ranger and the U.S. Department of the Interior (National Park Service) for wrongful death.
The March 21 shooting of Charles “Gage” Lorentz, 25, during a traffic stop in the New Mexico park as he was on his way home amounted to a violation of his civil rights, Lorentz’s parents Kimberly Beck and Travis Lorentz say in a federal suit filed Dec. 10. The two in July raised concerns that their son’s death was being covered up, but said they were not going to let that happen. ....
