FOND DU LAC - For decades one of the city s historic landmarks has struggled with the wear and tear of time.
Galloway House and Village sits on 15 acres of what was once a farmstead on the south edge of Fond du Lac, owned by banker and lumberman Edwin H. Galloway. In the late 1860s he developed Melrose Farms there, which later became famous for its brown Swiss cattle.
He also transformed the farmhouse into an Italianate villa and a showcase of lavish Victorian elegance and beauty.
In 1954, Edwin P. Galloway, grandson of the former owner, donated the house and surrounding land to the Fond du Lac County Historical Society as an ideal spot for a museum.
FOND DU LAC - City Council voted Wednesday night to pause work on the Lakeside Park project until the next council meeting, to allow its newest members to review the enhancement agreement.
The vote passed 4 to 2, with new council members Tiffany Brault, Keith Heisler and Vice President Patrick Mullen, as well as City Council President Kay Miller, in favor. Council members Donna Richards and Arletta Allen were opposed, and council member Ben Giles abstained.
The meeting agenda included discussion on the Lakeside Park plan and its future, and the proposed resolution was added Monday to pause all work on the park project except for the pavilion until May 12, to give the new council time to review the plan and the agreement with Lakeside Forward. If the council doesn t take action before then, the project will resume.
FOND DU LAC - City Council member Ben Giles has filed a civil suit against the city s Ethics Board, asking for a judicial review to reverse a decision made by the board last month that negatively affects him.
The petition was filed March 1 in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court and will be heard by Judge Tricia Walker.
The board last month found Giles violated one of the sections of the city s Code of Ethics regarding dedicated service because he sought the opinion of outside counsel in regard to whether he was obliged to recuse himself from voting on matters concerning an alternative master plan for Lakeside Park.
