The Daily Northwestern | "They're not supplementary": Ethnic studies students, professors continue years-long advocacy for AASP and LLSP departmentalization

Since students led a 23-day hunger strike in 1995 to institute the Asian American Studies Program, the demands of activists have continued to be linked to ethnic studies at Northwestern.
Starting in 2006, students and faculty advocated for the creation of the Latina and Latino Studies Program, which began around 2008, according to LLSP Director and Prof. Geraldo Cadava.
After the programs were established, students continued to push for the expansion of ethnic studies through events, discussions with faculty and administrators and numerous petitions. Student advocacy has been central to creating AASP and LLSP majors and minors, expanding the curriculum and increasing hiring in ethnic studies, according to AASP Director and Prof. Nitasha Sharma. ....

The Sachs Program announces 2021 arts grants

The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, in its latest grant cycle, will fund 25 arts projects with $177,000 in funding. The grants support, among many other themes and explorations, work that asks bold questions about speculative futures, translates the stories of frontline workers during the pandemic into theater, and spotlights marginalized voices that might otherwise go unheard.
“With our annual grants, we’re always thinking about how we are supporting marginalized communities, thinking about balancing our concrete aims in doing that, and being responsive through calls for supporting Black and AAPI artists,” says Chloe Reison, associate director of The Sachs Program. “And I do feel that, with those particular calls especially, we are reaching more people and that’s contributing to the diversity of our more general pool.” ....

It s a company that owns and operates avocado packing facilities in key growing locations globally, including California, Mexico and other regions.

Penn’s new Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies
The School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania announces the establishment of the Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies (CLALS). The center will stimulate and support research and teaching on the Latin American region and the Latinx populations of the U.S. and provide an integrated academic base for scholars, students, and programs across Penn that focus on these topics.
