J&J vaccine: Black, Latino Indiana advocates fight vaccine mistrust


For months, leaders in Indianapolis Black, Latino and underserved communities have been fighting an existing history of racism, mistrust and issues of lack of representation and language access around the COVID-19 vaccine. 
Community centers, churches, clinics and nonprofits have joined forces to bring the vaccine to Black and Latino neighborhoods.
Bilingual volunteers have helped thousands of Spanish-speaking Hoosiers register to get their shot, and multiple virtual informational panels have been hosted to help debunk myths. 
On Tuesday, federal health officials said they are recommending a pause in the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine due to six reported cases of a rare blood clot found in women after receiving the one-shot vaccine.  ....

Indiana Latino Institute hosting COVID-19 town hall series in Spanish

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The Indiana Latino Institute on Thursday will host the first of many town hall discussions on COVID-19 in Spanish.
The organization is collaborating with a number of partners that include the Indiana State Department of Health.
The first in the series of discussions will be on Facebook during an hourlong live discussion at 6 p.m. Thursday.
A panel of experts will answer questions regarding the disease. Those experts will include:

Council members rip Morales attorney for 'zip code' comment


Several members of the Milwaukee Common Council ripped attorney Franklyn Gimbel on Wednesday for comments he made to WTMJ radio earlier this week. In a statement, the members accused Gimbel of being racist.
Gimbel, who is representing former Chief Alfonso Morales, called the Fire & Police Commission “outrageously dysfunctional” during a conversation Monday with WTMJ’s Gene Mueller. Gimbel also suggested the city refrain from “using Zip Codes rather than IQ’s to appoint people to the (FPC).”
In a statement, signed by twelve council members, the aldermen criticized the attorney’s remarks.
“If Mr. Gimbel thought he was concealing his meaning behind clever language, he did a poor job of it,” the council members said. “Nonetheless, let us spell it out: none of the six members of Milwaukee’s Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are white. If Mr. Gimbel meant something else when he divided people by “Zip Code” other than their race, we encourage h ....
