Metro Vancouver hospital diverting pregnant patients due to "gap" in staff

Impacted patients will be contacted by their physicians or midwives directly, Fraser Health said. No other services at Peace Arch Hospital will be affected by the diversion.
Patients requiring urgent care should visit the emergency department closest to them, or call 911 if they believe they are having complications.
“Temporary diversions are part of our regular operating procedure and are used when there is a gap in service coverage,” Fraser Health said.
“They are intended to provide the best and safest care for patients at any time, using our extensive network of hospitals and health care services.”

Citing 'gap' in staff at Peace Arch Hospital, pregnant patients told to give birth elsewhere

VANCOUVER
A Metro Vancouver hospital is advising patients to plan to give birth elsewhere, as it won t have enough health-care workers to support them.
The Peace Arch Hospital will be experiencing what the Fraser Health Authority is calling a temporary gap in pediatrician coverage.
The period of what Fraser Health calls temporary diversions will be between July 8 and 19.
Those who have pre-existing plans to deliver at Peace Arch, located in White Rock, are being told instead to go to Langley Memorial Hospital, about 20 kilometres away.
Those in an emergency situation should go to whichever hospital is closest, or call 911 if they think they re having complications. ....

Coronavirus patients, doctors share the stories behind B.C.'s ventilator stats

VANCOUVER
As beleaguered medical professionals care more seriously ill COVID-19 patients in B.C. hospitals than ever before, those with first-hand experience with ventilators are sharing the dangerous and even life-altering fallout facing patients who’ve relied on the machines.
Despite intensive care units overflowing, B.C.’s Health Minister Adrian Dix has assured the public there are enough ventilator machines to support the sickest patients through the pandemic’s third wave. Still, the numbers have done little to capture the harsh reality and dangers that come with what doctors consider a last resort.
“We know when we commit a patient to a ventilator we’re committing them not just to being on a breathing machine, but to all the complications that can go along with that as well,” said St. Paul’s Hospital ICU physician, Dr. Ruth MacRedmond, who said high-flow oxygen is the first step to help struggling patients. ....
