Solar power focus: Virtual event featured speakers with renewable energy experience | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE The Upper Peninsula Clean Energy Conference series held a virtual event hosted by Michigan Energy Options on Thursday afternoon with a focus on solar power.
Thursday’s session, titled “Solar Energy Case Studies Lessons from On the Ground Projects,” offered discussions with leaders of solar and wind projects of different scales in L’Anse, Marquette and downstate Gratiot County.
Moderating the event’s three sessions were Michael Larson, U.P. operations manager for Michigan Energy Options; Richelle Winkler, professor of sociology and demography at Michigan Tech University; and John Kinch, executive director of Michigan Energy Options. ....

Baraga County officials: We won't enforce COVID restrictions | News, Sports, Jobs

L’ANSE In a letter Monday night, Baraga County officials said they would no longer enforce the state’s COVID-19 restrictions in the county.
Described by the officials as a “manifesto,” the letter was posted Monday night on a Facebook page for Brogan’s recent sheriff campaign. Signing along with Sheriff Joe Brogan were Prosecutor Joseph O’Leary, Clerk Wendy Goodreau, Treasurer Jill Tollefson and the five members of the county board Gale Eilola, Will Wiggins, Dan Robillard, Lyle Olsen and William Rolof, the latter of whom was chosen as board chair at a meeting shortly before the post. ....

The five-hour drive to Hancock gave me a scenic view of the U.P. Few towns, a lot of forests, little traffic and abundant scenery. By L’Anse I passed the copper sculpture of Bishop Baraga, the Snow Shoe Priest, and then turned north towards Houghton where I crossed over on the lift bridge and arrived in Hancock. I checked into a local motel, went to a restaurant, and had dinner. Much to my surprise, there on the menu the featured item was” Pasties!” Of course I had to ask the waitress to explain. She gave me a little history lesson, explaining that during the mining days the miners would carry their pasty dinner with them to the work site. A Pasty is of Welch (English) origin, and was adapted by the Finish miners in the U.P. It has been describ ....
