Up to 3,900 Lancaster County voters receive wrong instructions for mail-in ballots

Twenty-seven hundred Lancaster County voters who requested mail-in ballots for the May 18 primary election received a ballot packet that incorrectly informed them that they did not need to add postage to the return envelope.
The Lancaster County Board of Elections became aware of the error on Saturday, said Christa Miller, the board’s chief registrar. Unlike in the November 2020 election, Lancaster County voters are required to pay the postage to return their ballots in the mail.
Voters can avoid paying postage by placing their ballot in the drop box located in the Chestnut Street entrance to the county building at 150 N. Queen St. in Lancaster city.  ....

Effects of 2020 presidential election still linger for Lancaster's upcoming municipal primary [Lancaster Watchdog]

Lancaster County election officials are preparing for the May 18 primary knowing in advance that the number of voters casting mail-in ballots will be far fewer than what they dealt with in November’s presidential election, when more than 90,000 no-excuse or absentee ballots were cast.
About 22,000 ballots were mailed out during the third week of April, said Christa Miller, the county’s new chief registrar of the Board of Elections. Approximately 200 to 400 ballots are going out every day in different batches, as more ballots are requested, Miller added.
As of Thursday, 24,000 Lancaster County voters had requested a mail-in ballot. Of those, approximately 2,300 were requested by independent or third-party voters who otherwise wouldn’t be eligible to vote in a primary election. But all voters are eligible, no matter their affiliation, to vote on three proposed constitutional amendments and one ballot referendum question. ....

The Lancaster County Sheriff s Office reports deputies located 28-year Dana Benitez in Lincoln Tuesday evening and no longer considers her a missing person.
Investigators say she was a passenger in a pickup that slid off the road and got stuck in a ditch Sunday night in the area of U.S. Highway 34 and NW 42nd.
The Sheriff s office says the driver went to get help and reports when he returned, the woman was gone, leading to the missing person report.

Lancaster County Courts to resume jury trials starting in March

Criminal trials will resume in Lancaster County per a new administrative order from President Judge David Ashworth.
The order states that while the courthouse will remain closed to the general public to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19, trials can resume starting March 1 at the discretion of each judge and providing there are resources available.
Last month, Ashworth said he was hoping to open up three courtrooms, along with room 102/104 in the Lancaster County Government building, to be used for trials. The rooms are large enough to ensure social distancing of court staff, jurors and attorneys.
“Everything remains the same (as last week s plan),” Ashworth said in an email Tuesday. “Of course, it also remains fluid.” ....
