LAS VEGAS – A county board voted unanimously Tuesday to rename busy McCarran International Airport after former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada.
The all-Democratic Clark County Commission approved a measure directing the county’s airport staff to file a change with the Federal Aviation Administration renaming the facility Harry Reid International Airport.
The county commission oversees the airport and is the final authority on a name change.
There have been long-standing calls to rename the airport. Its current namesake, Patrick McCarran, served as one of Nevada’s two U.S. senators from 1933 until his death in 1954. He was known for his contributions to aviation along with his anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic views. ....

Clark County votes to rename Las Vegas' McCarron International Airport for former senator Harry Reid

“You name things in your community after people that represent your community, and to me Sen. Reid embodies the American dream. He came from nothing and became one of the most powerful people in the world,” said Commissioner Ross Miller, who said Mr. Reid embodies that dream “maybe more so than anybody else in the history of this country.”
“That’s the story we want to tell. That’s what we want everybody who comes into Las Vegas to see,” Mr. Miller said.
Mr. Reid himself had pushed for years to remove McCarran’s name, regularly railing to reporters on Capitol Hill and elsewhere about his predecessor’s history. ....

In a 7-0 vote, the commission agreed to send the request for a name change to the Federal Aviation Administration. The proposed name is Harry Reid International Airport.
The FAA has the authority to approve the name change and will analyze the request, according to the
Las Vegas
Review-Journal.
Reid, 81, is a longtime Nevada public official who became US Senate majority leader in 2007. ....
