South Holland MP defends paid roles after national newspaper report

MP Sir John Hayes has said his post-Government paid roles were âall signed off, right and properâ.
Sir Johnâs photo featured on the front page of Fridayâs i newspaper as one of a series of David Cameronâs former ministers that it said had âfound private sector jobs linked to their role in government within two years of stepping downâ.
Sir John said that he believes the newspaper may have made a mistake in its reporting.

The MP, who has represented South Holland and the Deepings since 1997, left his last Government role as Minister of State in the Department for Transport in 2018. ....

Volunteer litter pickers have labelled a district councillor âout of touch with realityâ, following comments he posted on social media but Roger Gambba-Jones says he was defending hard working staff.
The Wombles of Spalding Common have hit back at Coun Gambba-Jones after he posted comments on Twitter regarding a reaction to South Holland District Councilâs plan to work closely with all litter picking groups in the area.
Taking to his Twitter page, Coun Gambba-Jones said that he felt comments regarding the plan, which it is hoped will encourage better communication between SHDC and the groups, posted on social media were âdisappointing, misdirected (and even ignorant and abusive)â. ....

A senior police officer has said the sentence handed out to a man who racially abused a taxi driver in Spalding is not enough of a deterrent to stop such behaviour.
In last weekâs Spalding Guardian we reported on the case of former professional golfer John William Ronson.
The 55-year-old admitted using âracially abusive words and behaviourâ towards a driver in Spalding in a hearing before Boston magistrates on March 23.

Ronson was fined Â£200, ordered to pay Â£200 compensation to the driver and had to pay Â£119 in court costs and charges in relation to the incident - which took place on August 17 last year. ....

A leading food manufacturing firm has called on people to stop blaming their industry for the districtâs high Covid-19 infection rate.
South Holland has had one of the highest infection rates in the country - with the nature of food and factory work put forward as a possible explanation.
However, a spokesman for Bakkavor - which has sites in Spalding, Holbeach St Marks and Bourne - said it was unfair to blame business such as theirs.

The husband of a terminally ill woman has successfully fought a hospital parking fine.
Malcolm Munson (69) had tried to pay the Â£1 parking charge at Bostonâs Pilgrim Hospital during a half-hour visit on February 26.
The machine had returned his coin, stating that he had 30 minutes free parking - but he later received a letter demanding that he pay Â£42.

After calls from the Guardian, United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust waived the fee and confirmed 30 minutesâ free parking is still offered at the hospital.
Mr Munson, who is also a Blue Badge holder, had been to hospital for a regular appointment with wife Sandra (69), who was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and has defied doctorsâ expectations. ....
