One of the nation s oldest continuously operating museums has named Lynda Roscoe Hartigan its first female director in its 221-year history.
The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, announced on Thursday that Hartigan of the Royal Ontario Museum of Toronto would begin as the museum s next CEO on Aug. 23.

The week in art news – Florida makes toppling a statue a felony


On Monday the governor of the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, signed the
‘Combating Public Disorder Act’ into law. Under the provisions of the new law any person who ‘willfully and maliciously’ damages a memorial or other historic property can be charged with a third-degree felony carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison. Actually toppling or destroying a monument will carry a punishment of up to 15 years in prison. The law, which is intended to curtail rioting, defines a memorial as anything that ‘honors or recounts the military service of any past or present’, as well as the ‘public service’ of any resident of the United States. A study of 2020 counted at least 54 Confederate memorials still standing in Florida. DeSantis said he was ‘taking an unapologetic stand for the rule of law and public safety’.
