Each February, the channel showcases standout work presented this year under the umbrella title “Noteworthy African American Performances.” The Jacqueline Stewart-hosted series will run on Wednesday nights and very early Thursday mornings throughout the month, and here s a look at some of the talents and attractions to be spotlighted. “In the Heat of the Night” (1967; Thursday): Part of a full evening of Sidney Poitier features, this Oscar-winning mystery is one of the actor s top hits, the tale of a Southern murder investigation uneasily shared by a big-city homicide detective (Poitier) and a bigoted small-town sheriff (Rod Steiger, doing Academy Award-honored work). Under Norman Jewison s direction, the drama is as much social commentary as crime saga . certainly ....
The actress Cicely Tyson, who died on Jan. 28 at age 96, was justly celebrated for her roles honoring African-American experiences in “Sounder” (1972), “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” (1974), and “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” (1994), among others. But less has been said about her early work with stellar Jewish performers, and how that may have impacted her fight for civil rights. Tyson was born in Harlem to parents originally from Nevis in the West Indies, where traces of a venerable community of Sephardic Jewish origin are still visible. The film was directed by Daniel Mann (born Daniel Chugerman), with a screenplay adapted from a novel by Gerald Green (born Greenberg). Green would later write the teleplay for “Holocaust,” the 1978 TV miniseries. ....

Later, two Ascension Parish 21-year-olds and an Assumption Parish 19-year-old were booked with charges of having a variety of drugs, stolen weapons, cash, and equipment, a release from the Assumption Parish Sheriff s Office said. Agents with the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries Enforcement Division spoke to Pierre Par resident Brendan Scott Charlet, 19, and Gonzales resident Kade Leo Penn, 21, about allegations of illegal hunting.
