Jefferson County Legislature unanimously opposes closure of Watertown prison

WATERTOWN â Jefferson County legislators Tuesday unanimously opposed the stateâs decision to close the Watertown Correctional Facility.
The county Board of Legislators voted to pass a resolution which argues the closure is inadvisable for a number of reasons, including that no local input was requested before the decision to close was made and that three other prisons closed in the region over the last decade have not found other uses, indicating the Watertown facility will likely fall into disuse.
Camp Gabriels in Franklin County closed in 2009, Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility in Dannemora, Clinton County, closed in 2011, and Chateaugay Correctional Facility in Franklin County closed in 2014. All three facilities have seen potential buyers, but no development since their closure. ....

North Country Officials Criticize Planned Prison Closures

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that the Watertown and Gowanda Correctional facilities and the Clinton Annex, a part of the Clinton Correctional Facility, will be closed by March 30st , 2021. Officials in the North Country are upset by the decision.
According to a statement emailed to WAMC from Department of Corrections spokesperson Thomas Mailey, the agency reviewed operations at all 52 correctional facilities and identified the three for closure based on a number of factors including physical infrastructure, facility security, potential reuse and prior closures in the region to reduce community impact. It’s expected the closures will save $89 million annually.
The corrections’ officers union – NYSCOPBA – Northern Region Vice President John Roberts says their office was summoned to a conference call Monday morning and informed of the closures. Roberts notes that the Clinton Annex is unique in that it is a part of the larger Clinton Correctional prison ....

Three prisons in Upstate New York will close in early 2021, the state announced Monday.
The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said the Gowanda and Watertown correctional facilities, both medium-security prisons, and the Clinton Annex, which is part of the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, will close in the coming weeks. Inmates will be moved the state’s other 49 correctional facilities and nearly 1,000 jobs will be affected. ....
