국내 ‘매스티지’ 브랜드 소비자 외면 반면 ‘에루샤’ 코로나에도 실적 호조…“우리의 명품을 만들어야”

[일요신문] 국내 명품 브랜드가 시장에서 힘을 쓰지 못하고 있다. 코로나19 팬데믹(Pandemic·대유행)을 탓하기도 쑥스럽다. 세계 3대 명품인 ‘에루샤’(에르메스·루이비통·샤넬)가 코로나19 시기에도 오히려 실적 호조를 보였기 때문이다.
MCM 매출은 지난해에 3000억 원대 초반까지 추락했다. 서울의 한 MCM 매장. 사진=연합뉴스8일 업계에 따르면 국내 명품 브랜드인 MCM, 루이까또즈, 메트로시티는 모두 지난해 실적 악화를 겪었다. 매스티지(대중적인 명품) 열풍으로 브랜드 가치를 상승시켰던 과거와 달리 최근에는 소비자들의 외면에 시장 경쟁력마저 상실했다는 평가가 나올 정도다.
2005년 성주그룹은 독일 뮌헨에서 시작된 브랜드 MCM을 인수했다. 특유의 모노그램(문자마크) 디자인은 한국과 중국에서 큰 인기를 끌었고, 이에 힘입어 2010년 글로벌 명품만 들어간다는 롯데백화점 본점 명품관에 매장을 냈다. 2016년엔 연 매출 5791억 원을 기록하며 정점을 찍었다.
하지만 2016년 7월 한국의 사드(THAAD·고고도미사일방어) 배치 결정 이후 중국의 보복으로 한한령(중국 내 한류 금지 명령)이 시작되면서 인기가 시들해졌다. MCM의 경우 ‘중국인들의 국민가방’으로 불릴 만큼 중국인 매출 비중이 약 60% 정도를 차지해왔다.
금융감독원 전자공시시스템에 따르면 MCM 매출은 2017년 5125억 원을 찍은 뒤 2019년 4944억 원을 기록하며 소폭 하락하다 지난해에는 3000억대 초반까지 추락했다. MCM 관계자는 "중국 한한령과 코로나19 탓에 매출이 떨어졌다"며 "앞으로 시대와 소비자 성향을 고려한 트렌디한 디자인과 마케팅으로 브랜드 경쟁력 강화에 집중해 매출을 끌어올릴 것"이라고 말했다.
프랑스 루이까또즈를 인수해 전개해오는 태진인터내셔날의 매출도 해가 갈수록 떨어지고 있다. 2015년 1500억 원대의 매출액이 2017년 1100억 원대로 줄었고 2018년에는 1000억 원대마저 무너졌다. 급기야 지난해에는 615억 원의 매출을 기록해 6년 만에 반 토막도 더 났다.
이탈리아 메트로시티를 인수한 엠티콜렉션도 2015년 1192억 원, 2016년 1189억 원, 2017년 1106억 원의 매출액을 기록하다 지난해 618억 원으로 급락했다.

에르메스코리아 감사보고서에 따르면 에르메스의 지난해 매출은 4190억 9600만 원으로 전년(3618억 원) 대비 15.8% 늘었다. 영업이익은 1333억 8700만 원으로 전년(1150억 원) 대비 15.9% 증가했다. 온라인 매출도 큰 폭으로 올랐다. 온라인 명품 커머스 '머스트잇'에 따르면 지난해 에르메스의 온라인 판매량은 전년 대비 51% 증가했다.
샤넬코리아는 지난해 한국에서 9296억 원 정도의 매출액을 기록했다. 다만 이 매출액은 2019년 1조 639억 원 대비 12.6% 감소한 수치다. 매출 감소 이유 중 하나로 '가격 인상'이 꼽힌다. 샤넬은 지난해 5월과 11월 가격 인상을 단행한 바 있다. 5월에는 핸드백 제품 등 일부 품목 가격을 최저 1%에서 최대 18% 인상했고 11월엔 클래식 라인, 보이샤넬 및 가브리엘 라인 등 제품을 3~13% 올렸다.
하지만 가격 인상에도 지난해 국내사업부 매출은 26% 성장했다. 샤넬의 매출 감소의 결정적 이유는 코로나19로 인한 면세사업부 매출의 81% 하락 때문인 것으로 풀이된다. 즉 가격 인상에도 불구하고 국내 시장에서 소비자들이 더 찾았다는 것이다. 오히려 국내 소비자들 사이에선 “샤넬은 오늘이 제일 싸다”라는 말이 나오면서 가격 인상 소식이 있을 때마다 ‘오픈런’(아침 일찍 기다렸다가 백화점 문이 열리자마자 들어가 구매한다는 뜻) 행렬이 이어진다. 샤넬의 지난해 영업이익은 1491억 원으로 전년(1109억 원) 대비 34.4% 증가했다.
올해부터 감사보고서 제출 의무가 생긴 루이비통도 에르메스와 샤넬 못지않은 실적을 자랑했다. 지난 4월 루이비통코리아가 발표한 감사보고서에 따르면 2020년 매출액은 1조 468억 원으로 2019년 7846억 원 대비 33.4% 증가했다. 영업이익은 1519억 원으로 2019년 549억 원 대비 176.68% 급증했다.
해외 명품 브랜드와 국내 브랜드의 현격한 매출액 추이 차이에 대해 유통업계 관계자들은 MZ세대의 접근 차이가 큰 영향을 끼친 것으로 풀이한다. 백화점업계 한 관계자는 “고객 소비 양극화 현상이 심해지면서 비싼 건 더 비싸게, 싼 건 더 싸게 사는 심리가 높아지고 있다”며 “그 중심에 최근 소비문화를 이끄는 MZ세대가 있는데, 이들의 명품 매출 비율은 백화점별로 30% 이상 차지한다”고 설명했다.
정연승 한국유통학회장은 “MZ세대는 미래가 잘 보이지 않는다고 느껴 현실에 집중하려는 경향이 있고 현재의 삶을 즐기고 자아실현 욕구에 충실하다”며 “국내 명품 브랜드보다 해외 명품 브랜드 구매에서 얻는 만족감에 더 충실한 세대”라고 설명했다.
국내 명품 브랜드들이 스스로 가치를 높이지 못하고 브랜드 이미지를 떨어뜨렸다는 분석도 있다. 신생 브랜드가 쏟아지면서 갈수록 경쟁이 심해지고 있는 상황에서 새로운 디자인이나 주력 상품을 내세우지 못했다는 것이다. 수백만 원에서 수천만 원에 달하는 해외 명품 브랜드와 달리 국내 브랜드들의 가격대는 10만~200만 원대로 저렴하지만 오히려 이 때문에 국내 명품 시장에서 애매한 처지로 전락했다는 지적도 있다.
백화점업계 다른 관계자는 “브랜드 가치가 애매해진 국내 브랜드들이 과도한 할인행사를 열곤 하는데 이는 오히려 브랜드 가치를 훼손시켜 이미지 추락에 가속도를 붙였다”고 강조했다.
베블런 효과(Veblen Effect, 가격이 오르는데도 일부의 과시욕이나 허영심 등으로 인해 수요가 줄어들지 않는 현상)도 한 이유로 꼽힌다. 이은희 인하대학교 소비자학과 교수는 “가격이 상승하면 해당 제품을 구매할 수 있는 일명 ‘부자’와 구매하지 못하는 사람을 구별할 수 있는 효과가 생겨 사람들의 차별화 욕구를 충족시켜주기도 한다”고 설명했다.
리셀(되팔기)도 해외 명품 브랜드 제품을 선호하는 이유다. 브랜드별로 정해진 수량을 만드는 해외 명품 브랜드들은 한정판이라는 이미지가 강해 향후 중고 거래 시 본래 가격보다 높은 가격에 리셀된다. 이은희 교수는 “월급을 모아 아파트를 사는 게 불가능에 가깝다고 생각하는 젊은 세대에게 리셀이 하나의 재테크 수단으로 자리 잡고 있다”며 “앞으로 이 시장 규모는 더 커질 것”이라고 말했다.
우리나라 명품 시장이 확대되면서 국내 대표 명품 브랜드를 만들어 가야 한다는 목소리가 높다. 시장조사업체 유로모니터에 따르면 지난해 한국의 명품 매출 규모는 125억 420만 달러(약 14조 원)로, 전 세계 명품 시장에서 7위를 차지했다. 서용구 숙명여대 경영학부 교수는 “국내 명품 시장이 확대되면서 프랑스, 이탈리아 등 해외 유명 명품 브랜드들의 한국 시장을 바라보는 모습이 예전과 다르다”며 “해외에서 한국 명품 시장을 지켜보는 만큼 우리의 명품을 만들 때가 됐다”고 강조했다.
