In the comments, an
NYT reader asks why the newspaper doesn’t devote this much brilliant attention to more substantive matters like gun violence and public school test scores.
To be fair, sometimes it does, such as its 2016 article that investigated all 358 mass shootings in 2015 and found that in almost three-fourths, the victims and perps were black. But few subscribers were much interested in hearing
that back then, and such a finding would probably get you canceled in 2021.
So, for Bill James-like analysis of important social issues you need to come to

The Brewers avoided a sweep at the hands of the Mets Wednesday by taking the second game of the doubleheader 5-0.
The long ball carried Milwaukee to the sweep-avoiding victory. Manny Pina hit a two-run home run in the second inning, Willy Adames added a solo shot in the sixth, and Luis Urias hit a two-run insurance dinger in the seventh.
Brett Anderson went four innings on the hill, scattering three hits.
The Brewers dropped the first game of the doubleheader Wednesday 4-3 in eight innings. Jacob DeGrom and Corbin Burnes faced off in a battle of pitching All-Stars. DeGrom went seven frames and gave up two solo home runs to Luis Urias and Jace Peterson. Burnes pitched 5.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing one run.

Mets rally late again vs. Phillies bullpen in 4-3 walk-off win

Mets ace Jacob deGrom gave up two runs for the first time this season and New York rallied after he exited, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 Saturday on Michael Conforto's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

DeGrom's shutout streak ends at 31 innings, Mets top Phils

NEW YORK (AP) — By the middle of his outing, Mets ace Jacob deGrom was struggling to find his mechanics that essentially made him a two-pitch pitcher. “Jake is human, right?” New York manager Luis Rojas said.

Mets ace deGrom exits after three innings with right shoulder soreness

NEW YORK — The good vibes at Citi Field tangibly turned to dread. Jacob deGrom exited his start with right shoulder soreness, the Mets announced, after three perfect innings against the Cubs on Wednesday night. His early departure came on the heels of his last troubling outing, when he left after six innings against the Padres with right flexor tendinitis. On Wednesday against Chicago, deGrom ...

Jacob deGrom's Arm Injury Scare Serves As A Reminder Of The Fragile Nature Of His Historic Run

Every five days, Jacob deGrom shoves them all off center stage, because as was proven again Friday night — when the Islanders and Nets were idle, thereby giving a singular talent the spotlight all to himself — every appearance he makes carries with it the promise of history as well as an omnipres...

Jacob deGrom injury: Mets ace leaves start vs. Padres with right flexor tendinitis

The two-time Cy Young Award winner threw six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts against the Padres before exiting after just 80 pitches.

DeGrom does it all but leaves with injury in 3-2 win over Padres

Jacob deGrom was pulled from a do-it-all gem with right flexor tendinitis, a troubling diagnosis for the New York Mets that clouded a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

When I reflect upon the things I sometimes say, I often have regrets. I recognize the error of my ways, even if it may be too soon after last night to use the word “error.” I, like most of you, I presume, hold to some pretty hard and fast principles, like not becoming a degenerate gambler (at least not with stakes large enough to alter my or my family’s lifestyle).
If I were a degenerate gambler willing to bet everything, the house, the car, and even my neighbor’s stuff, I’d now have doubled my net worth based on last night’s performance. The Yankees came into the game having lost 10 of their last 13. The Twins came in on a two-game win streak (which, granted is less a streak, than a fully clothed jog, but nevertheless, it was improvement.) The betting lines when I looked before the game were -110 for each team.

The Angels' Shohei Ohtani's exploits aren't quite unprecedented. Only Yankee legend Babe Ruth, who also excelled as a pitcher with the Red Sox, compares.

Jacob deGrom returns from injury to lead Mets to win over Rockies

Jacob deGrom was back to doing Jacob deGrom things: hitting 101 mph on the radar gun, punching out batters and boosting his batting average. The Mets could not have asked for much more from deGrom in his return from the injured list. Making his first start in 16 days, deGrom struck out nine over five innings in the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Rockies on Tuesday night at Citi Field. “That’s what we ...

Colorado Rockies news: The weaknesses are glaring, but what are the strengths of the Rockies?

There are a lot of things that are wrong with the Colorado Rockies and their near-NL-worst record of 18-29 represents that. From an inconsistent offense to a bullpen prone to imploding and the inability to manufacture runs on the road, there are only a few teams in the league with this kind of unique ability to find so many ways to lose games. But what does this team do right? What are its strengths? Are there any?
There are. When you look past all the losses, there’s a few things this team has going.
This is an aspect of the team that I think often gets taken for granted. The Rockies have some of the best speed in the league with guys like Trevor Story, Garrett Hampson, Raimel Tapia and Yonathan Daza. As a team, they have stolen 27 bases which is sixth-most in the majors. The four mentioned above have combined to score 85 of the team’s 218 total runs. They’ve only been caught stealing seven times this year so there’s an argument to be made that the Rockies could use some more aggressiveness on the basepaths to get more runners in scoring position. This could be especially important since the Rockies are only slugging .398.

There’s no denying that Madison Bumgarner’s recent form has been fantastic. All the more so, in fact, because of the contrast in which it stands to his previous performances as a Diamondback. There had been serious doubts as to the worth of the five-year $85 million deal which Madison signed in December 2019. The first season had been a disaster, with a 6.48 ERA, and this year had started off worse still. After four starts, Bumgarner’s ERA was 11.20, and his overall figures with Arizona were among the worst ever for any pitcher. But then, something changed. What was it? Madison, apparently, knows what it is but won’t tell, saying cryptically after last night’s game:

Making his first start against the Mets since a 2018 trade, Harvey lasted just 4.1 innings, where the Mets struck for seven runs. That outburst, plus another strong outing from starter Taijuan Walker, paced a 7-1 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday in New York.

Mets Place Jacob DeGrom On 10-Day Injured List

I don’t fully disagree with what @downsr30 is saying, but Ryan and Johnson are really more of outliers. The overall trend of injuries does have to do some with throwing as hard as guys are now, but it’s likely more because they are starting at such a young age, playing all year around, throwing harder, but also throwing more breaking and off speed pitches. Throwing hard is just one of the multiple reasons why there are so many injuries anymore.
I dont disagree with you completely Mlb1225 but there will always be outliers and maybe DeGrom is one.

Torey Lovullo had a hefty left-handed hitters lineup prepared for Mets’ starter and right handed pitcher Jacob DeGrom. Not that the split really matters (lefies have an average of just over .220 against DeGrom), but you have to game plan something against the man who is arguably the league’s best pitcher.
But the Mets’ ace was eventually game planned by his own body as he left the game in the 6th, after struggling in the 5th, with what is apparently “side tightness”. I have no idea what that means. Was it good or bad news? I have no idea about that either. Until the 5th inning Jacob DeGrom looked like he was going to no hit the D-Backs, but in that 5th inning the D-Backs had the bases loaded with no outs.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom feels better, but still monitoring lat injury

NEW YORK — Jacob deGrom listened to his body and decided to play it safe. The Mets ace was scratched from his start against the Cardinals in St. Louis with a sore right lat on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he was feeling better, but planned to wait a little longer before making his next start. “I’m feeling good now,” deGrom said Wednesday before the Mets’ doubleheader against the Cardinals. “The ...

Colorado Rockies news: Power rankings through four weeks

Today marks four weeks since the Rockies beat the Dodgers on Opening Day by putting up eight runs, six of which came while Clayton Kershaw was on the mound. The good times were quickly followed by four losses and a week later came a seven-game losing streak. With the Rockies playing better as of late (ignoring Monday’s 12-0 drubbing by San Francisco), I figured four weeks into the year would be a good opportunity to put together a list of the three best players on the club so far this season.
Ryan McMahon
The organization and fans alike have been waiting for Ryan McMahon to break out for a couple years and my goodness has he done so thus far this season. The way McMahon has been playing has helped soften the blow of the Nolan Arenado trade. Perhaps the most surprising part of that is how well he’s filled in defensively at the hot corner.

Keeping Byron Buxton

Keeping Byron Buxton
Through the first seventeen games of the season, Byron Buxton is hitting .438 with an OPS close to 1.5. He feels confident, he looks confident and the Twins would be talking about the Nelson Cruz trade market without him. With a strangely low amount of fanfare, he has established himself as the most exciting player in the game.
It’s been quite a rise since the pandemic began for Buxton—At the end of 2019 he was facing serious shoulder surgery and had shown himself to be, when healthy, a defensive specialist who could eke out an .800 OPS. Provided he got hot at the right time, his production would fall somewhere between Jason Heyward and Peter Bourjos.

LEADING OFF: Weathers-Widener in rookie mat, deGrom vs Bosox

LEADING OFF: Weathers-Widener in rookie mat, deGrom vs Bosox
By The Associated PressApril 28, 2021 GMT
In a matchup of promising rookies, Padres lefty Ryan Weathers starts against Arizona righty Taylor Widener in Phoenix.
The 21-year-old Weathers is 1-0 with an 0.59 ERA in five games, two of them starts, this season. He made his major league debut last year for San Diego in the NL Division Series, pitching once against the Dodgers.
The 26-year-old Widener is 1-0 with a 2.82 ERA in four starts this season. He debuted last year with 12 games in relief for the Diamondbacks.
Brandon Nimmo, with a .470 on-base percentage, is hoping to get back in the lineup for the Mets a day after not starting because of a right hip impingement. Nimmo got an injection in the hip during a day off Monday and struck out as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night.

Jacob deGrom dominates Nationals in historic 15-strikeout game

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was in peak form Friday night against the Nationals, tossing his second career shutout with a career-high 15 strikeouts. That brings his season punch-out total to 50, breaking the previous record of 48 for most strikeouts in a player's first four outings held by Shane Bieber (2021) and Nolan Ryan (1978).
Because he can do no wrong, deGrom also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double. He's 6-for-11 on the season and has a hit in every game he's played in, and has scored more runs (three) than earned runs given up (one).
The Mets won, 6-0, as deGrom lowered his career ERA to 2.55—the lowest in Mets history. He allowed just two hits and no walks on the night.
