Broadband survey results will be presented to Lewis County board and live-streamed on Tuesday


LOWVILLE — The Lewis County Board of Legislators will be the first to receive the results of the broadband study done through the Development Authority of the North Country before its regular board meeting on Tuesday.
The 4 p.m. presentation by the DANC team will walk legislators and the viewing public through the fairly technical study.
“This isn’t like (the JCC community survey) presentation where there are easily understandable questions and answers resulting in percentages of respondents,” said County Manager Ryan Piche. “This study goes deeper into specialized information.”
While a survey of Lewis County residents’ experience with broadband and the internet services available to them was part of the study, a comprehensive “inventory” of the infrastructure that exists, the holes causing limited availability of fast internet service and an analysis of what it would take to make truly high speed internet available to the e ....

Public forum to be held on large solar farm proposed for towns of Croghan, Wilna


LOWVILLE — The primary opportunity for public comment on the Sugar Maple Solar Project proposed in the towns of Croghan and Wilna will be held virtually on Thursday.
Geronimo Energy, a National Grid subsidiary, was the originator of the project, which began the Article 10 process by filing a public involvement plan on March 11, 2020 with an update in May 2020. Public information meetings were also held virtually by Geronimo in May 2020.
National Grid changed the name of Geronimo to National Grid Renewables Development LLC in October and AES reported to the state Department of Public Service, which oversees the Article 10 process, that it had “acquired the assets” of Sugar Maple from that company in January. ....

Lewis County police reform plan to undergo final public input, potential board approval


LOWVILLE — After a number of meetings, public input and fine tuning, the police reform recommendations for Lewis County will be voted upon by the county Board of Legislators during their regular meeting Tuesday after a final public hearing.
Only one community member participated in the virtual Public Listening Session held on March 3, asking Sheriff Michael P. Carpinelli about law enforcement leaders he admires, but if the sheriff is correct, the in-person opportunity for the public to speak may entice more community members to participate.
“We should have had some kind of a public forum where people could come and talk and I think (people) would have much rather have done that than go over this Zoom thing. I think it would have been much more effective,” Sheriff Carpinelli said in an interview on Friday evening. ....

Seasonal Montague home goes up in flames


MONTAGUE — A blaze in the early hours of Friday morning devastated an unoccupied seasonal home and all of its contents.
According to the fire report provided by the Lowville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joe Austin, the house at 6730 Sears Pond Road owned by Eileen Pretre was already on fire when a passerby called 911 just before 5 a.m.
The structure was fully involved when the Lowville Department arrived at the scene.
“Fire crews extinguished the fire from a defensive stance as the building had already collapsed before arrival,” the report stated. “Firefighters from the three departments worked through the bitter cold temperatures to fight this fire.” ....
