Liberia: U.S. 2020 Human Rights Report Cites "Serious Problems" with the Judiciary

MONROVIA – The Judiciary under the watch of Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor has come under the spotlight for lacking independence while judges stand accused of soliciting bribes to try cases or even grant bails – according to the U.S. State Department 2020 Human Rights Report.
The report which was released on Tuesday by the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, cites arbitrary killings, detention and judicial lapses.
On the judiciary, the report states: “The Constitution provides for an independent judiciary, but judges and magistrates were subject to influence and engaged in corruption. Judges sometimes solicited bribes to try cases, grant bail to detainees, award damages in civil cases, or acquit defendants in criminal cases. Defense attorneys and prosecutors sometimes suggested defendants pay bribes to secure favorable decisions from judges, prosecutors, and jurors, or to have court staff place cases on the docket for trial.” ....

Liberia CSOs Want Senator Sherman Removed from Judicial Committee

Even though not many Liberians have a record of relinguishing their post upon discovery of unethical or moral deficiency on their parts, the civil society organizations of Liberia, Anti-Corruption Coalition and National Civil Society Council of Liberia have called on the Plenary of the Liberian Senate in a written communication to remove Senator Harry Varney Gboto-Nambi Sherman as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee to avoid bringing the Liberian Senate to public disrepute. 
Loretta A. Pope-Kai, National Chairperson of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia, made the call on behalf of the groups on Tuesday February 9, 2021 at a news conference in Monrovia. ....

MONROVIA – The Liberian Senate is carefully handling matters relating to economic sanction placed on one of their colleagues, Senator Varney Sherman of Grand Cape Mount County by the United States Department of Treasury on allegations of corruption and bribery.
Cllr. Sherman stands accused by the Treasury Department of facilitating bribery within the Judiciary for judges to grant ruling in his clients’ favor and in some instance paid bribe to facilitate the removal of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court – Justice Kabineh Ja’neh – who had ruled against him. ....
