The Day - Connecticut Democratic Party rule change felt on local level - News from southeastern Connecticut

The Connecticut Democratic Party has asked towns to put together their slates for municipal offices differently this year, a move criticized by Republicans as small-town politics heat up for a contentious election season.
Democrats say the measure protects against the spread of COVID-19. Republicans argue that the move is a form of voter suppression.
Rather than coming up with slates via caucuses, where any registered Democrat is allowed to vote, the state party has sought to limit local Democratic town committees to voting for candidate endorsements among committee members only.
The state party didn t notify the Secretary of the State s Office of its rule change in time for it to be formally added to the bylaws. Party officials claim this was on purpose, and was always meant to be a temporary change caused by the pandemic. ....

The Day - Those who backed Trump should now reflect on doing so - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published January 14. 2021 6:06PM
I applaud the East Lyme Republican Town Committee for forcefully stating what many of us instinctively knew was an insurrection at the nation’s Capitol. We need to understand the root of what happened and why so many voted for this defective, damaged person for our leader. None of this can happen before the people who attacked our nation and tried to subvert our election have been brought to justice.
As much as I respect the town committee for their statement, I also understand many of them voted for President Trump in 2016, putting him in the position to commit the crimes of last week. Trump voters need to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves if they were putting party over country. Trump has not changed. He has always been the star of his “snake” fable. He is and always has been the snake. ....

The Day - Local Republicans' views differ on Capitol violence - News from southeastern Connecticut

Some Republican officials in the region have spoken out following violent riots at the United States Capitol last week, some sharing conspiracy theories about the events that unfolded and defending protesters claims of voter fraud and election theft, while others have condemned what occured as acts of violence and domestic terrorism.
Phyllis Nelson, Republican chair of the Board of Finance in Sprague, said last week that she went to Washington, D.C., on a bus to participate in the protests to defend the Constitution and speak out against election fraud but did not set foot in the Capitol or on the stairs of the building. She said she left the Capitol grounds by 3 p.m. and left D.C. by 5 p.m., an hour before the city s curfew. Extremist groups stormed the Capitol about 2:15 p.m. ....
