And I’m transgender,” she said. “I am here before you today, representing the hundreds of thousands of kids just like me who are supported and loved by their family, friends, and communities across the country.” The House reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act, legislation that protects victims of sexual and domestic abuse, 244-172. Though the measure to reauthorize the 1994 law, which lapsed in 2018, received bipartisan support in the House, it faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans oppose certain provisions, including those that protect trans women.
