Walker Golder is the new executive director at NC Coastal Land Trust


Golder attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington for graduate school, where he earned a Master of Science degree in marine biology. He immediately began a long and successful career at the National Audubon Society. He held many roles at Audubon, notably as the deputy state director of Audubon’s North Carolina state office and most recently as the program director of the Atlantic Flyway Coast Strategy.
Golder is the recipient of several awards and recognitions, most notably the National Audubon Society’s 2013 Charles H. Callison Professional Award. A talented nature photographer, Golder’s photographs have appeared in dozens of publications, including eight book and magazine covers. ....

Conservation groups save Hutaff Island, sandwiched between Figure 8 and Topsail

PENDER COUNTY Hutaff Island will be preserved in perpituity, thanks to Audubon N. C., the N. C. Coastal Land Trust, the Hutaff and McEachern family, and philanthropist Tim Sweeney.
Coastal Land Trust made the Earth Day announcement, sharing an agreement to protect all 1,300 acres of the island was signed by the conservation partnership this week.
Once connected to Lea Island, the 2-mile Hutaff Island is sandwiched by Figure 8 to its south and Topsail Beach to its north. ....

Conservation Groups Agree To Conserve NC Barrier Island

One of North Carolina’s last privately owned undeveloped barrier islands will soon be conserved.  The 2-mile long Hutaff Island, located between Lea Island and Topsail Beach, serves as nesting grounds for sea turtles and shorebirds. The island also has more than 1,000 acres of tidal marsh and creeks that serve as nursery habitat for fish, shrimp, and crabs. The conservation partnership involves The North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, Audubon North Carolina and the Hutaff/McEachern family, funded by conservation philanthropist Tim Sweeney.  An agreement has been signed and the Coastal Land Trust will complete the process within 60 days. ....

Federal Funds to Conserve NC Wetlands | Coastal Review Online

Several hundred acres on the northeast and central coast of North Carolina are to be conserved and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge will be able to protect 70 acres of waterfowl habitat with funding awarded this week.
The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission approved $78 million through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, or NAWCA, for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and partners to help conserve or restore nearly 500,000 acres of wetland and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds and other birds in the U.S., including North Carolina, Mexico and Canada, the Department of Interior announced Wednesday. ....
