Getting rid of hog farms is real goal of anti-biogas activists

The Fayetteville Observer
As The Fayetteville Observer reported last week, North Carolina farmers are working to generate renewable energy by capturing methane on their farms and converting it to biogas. The effort is accurately seen by many, including our elected officials, as a positive step forward that helps position North Carolina as a leader in clean energy.
Others view it as another opportunity to attack our state’s pork industry. The reaction from one environmental activist? “Some of these people need to be in jail.” That retort came from a leader of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network. Now I’ve heard it all. Presumably the people she wants to see jailed are the honest, hard-working farmers who legally operate their farms with a permit from the state. ....

GOLDSBORO, N.C. It s 6 miles as the crow flies from the childhood home of Michael Regan to the shuttered coal plant that helped light up this city of 35,000 people.
During the 1980s, the plant s three coal-fired generators were industrial monoliths on the edge of town, pulsing out nearly 400 megawatts of electric power to Wayne County and east-central North Carolina.
It was also when Regan, the first Black man nominated to lead EPA, had his first asthma attacks, a condition triggered by heat, allergens and air pollution. ....

Smithfield project that converts hog waste to energy worries Sampson, Duplin residents

The N.C. Division of Air Quality granted Smithfield Foods and Dominion Energy one of the permits they need to move forward in completing a controversial project to create natural gas by using hog waste in Sampson and Duplin County.
With the air quality permit, the two companies will build a gas-conditioning facility to trap biogas, or hog feces, and process it to inject the gas into a 30-mile-long pipeline that will run between Turkey and Warsaw. This is the first step in their joint Align RNG project.
“This is great news for the environment, consumers and family farmers across North Carolina,” said Kraig Westerbeek, the senior director of Smithfield Renewables at Smithfield Foods. “Renewable natural gas is a transformational opportunity to reduce farm emissions, generate clean energy and provide economic opportunity for family farmers.   ....

Four things in Wilmington (in-person and virtual) to celebrate MLK Day

Four things in Wilmington (in-person and virtual) to celebrate MLK Day
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is historically a time to reflect on the late Civil Rights leader and his thoughts and goals for a better world during a time when society was changing and colliding.
And as issues such as racial injustice and more recently a Capitol Hill riot remain at the forefront, the anniversary of King s birthday on Friday   MLK Day, however, observed Monday  perhaps holds more meaning than ever.
So while some annual MLK Day events, such as the downtown parade, are canceled this year due to COVID-19, others have emerged online while a few in-person gatherings are scheduled with protocols such as social distancing.  ....
