Endangered red wolf from Washington zoo receives novel operation at OSU veterinary hospital
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Specialists at Oregon State University’s veterinary hospital operated Tuesday on a rare red wolf from the breeding program at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Washington.
Chester, who was born at the Tacoma, Wash. zoo nearly two years ago, is one of only about 260 red wolves remaining in the world.
The procedure went smoothly and as of Wednesday morning, Chester was back home in Tacoma, bright-eyed and very excited about his breakfast.
“We’re feeling really excited and hopeful that this will help give him a good quality of life and help him feel better,” said Dr. Kadie Anderson, associate zoo veterinarian at Point Defiance and a 2011 graduate of OSU’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine. ....

Psychosocial factors may contribute to dropout of patients from peritoneal dialysis

Psychosocial factors may contribute to dropout of patients from peritoneal dialysis
A retrospective study conducted by LSU Health New Orleans reports that contrary to previous research, most patients who drop out of peritoneal dialysis may do so for psychosocial reasons. The findings are published in
The American Journal of the Medical Sciences.
The research team evaluated the reasons that 27 of the 83 patients enrolled in the peritoneal dialysis program withdrew between 2016 and 2018. Twenty-four or 86% were African American. They found that psychosocial factors, including mental health illness such as anxiety and depression, loss of support networks, or inability to tolerate the number of treatment sessions required by peritoneal dialysis, accounted for 63% of the dropout rate due to controllable factors. ....

Understanding stroke and heart disease in women remains a major research priority
Understanding the sex differences in cardiovascular disease presentation and outcomes remains a major research priority demonstrated by the record number of submissions for this year s Go Red for Women® special issue of the American Heart Association s flagship journal
Circulation, published online today.
Circulation editors said more than 100 manuscripts were submitted this year, the most ever in the five years in which the current editorial board has published the special issue.

MIT engineers design origami-inspired medical patch for minimally invasive tissue sealing

MIT engineers design origami-inspired medical patch for minimally invasive tissue sealing
Many surgeries today are performed via minimally invasive procedures, in which a small incision is made and miniature cameras and surgical tools are threaded through the body to remove tumors and repair damaged tissues and organs. The process results in less pain and shorter recovery times compared to open surgery.
While many procedures can be performed in this way, surgeons can face challenges at an important step in the process: the sealing of internal wounds and tears.
Taking inspiration from origami, MIT engineers have now designed a medical patch that can be folded around minimally invasive surgical tools and delivered through airways, intestines, and other narrow spaces, to patch up internal injuries. The patch resembles a foldable, paper-like film when dry. Once it makes contact with wet tissues or organs, it transforms into a stretchy gel, similar to a contact lens, and ca ....
