House passes lands bill with Colorado measures

The House of Representatives on Friday passed a multi-state public lands bill that includes new protections for more than 1 million acres of lands in Colorado, and it now likely will face a tougher test in the Senate.
Bill sponsors and supporters hailed the House’s 227-200 vote to pass the Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act, while U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Silt, reiterated her criticism of its inclusion of widespread acreage in her 3rd Congressional District without her support or that of some affected counties.
The measure includes the 660,000-acre Colorado Wilderness Act, sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and the 400,000-acre Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy (CORE) Act, sponsored by Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Lafayette. It also includes protections for 821,000 acres in California, 132,000 acres in Washington, and more than one million acres in Arizona, north and south of the Grand Canyon. ....

The American West embraces more than its share of spectacular landscapes. But there’s nothing else quite like the vast swath of canyons, mesas, sandstone spires and arches that stretches some 80 miles from north to south in the southeast corner of Utah, ranging in altitude from sagebrush flats to pinyon-and-juniper forests and old growth stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. ....

The Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act, or PAW Act, was considered by the House Rules Committee Tuesday, and is now expected to undergo a vote by the House of Representatives perhaps on Friday.
It includes the 660,000-acre Colorado Wilderness Act, sponsored by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and the 400,000-acre Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy Act, sponsored by Rep.
