In the soft brown of early morning, my brother’s penmanship was always sharp against the rising sky. Other scribes handled their quill-spears with more grace, perhaps. My brother looked as though he was warring with the horizon, the ribbons of ink rising like jagged smoke from the tip of his quill-spear. But what he wrote was clear.
Now he has gone.
They say that from the cities of the Brittle Terrain, a full day’s journey behind us and away from the horizon, it is difficult to see our writing at all, impossible to make out the names of God we scribe onto the sky’s parchment. Yet from where we work, at the edge of the eastern horizon, where the sky rises up from below in a continuous wave, the vertical columns of script do not begin to fade until they’ve reached the level of the lowest clouds. At that height, the curling loops and slanting lines of our worship finally blur to become a rising braid of ink. I try to imagine how it looks from the citie ....

A 48-year-old man was arrested in Niblett St in central Whanganui on Wednesday after reports of a historic charge. He appeared in Whanganui District Court that day charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Walk rescheduled
The 2021 Pride Walk, postponed because of Covid-19 alert level 2 restrictions, has been rescheduled. It will be held on Saturday, April 24. The highest precious metal values were obtained from a sample of the Ymir-Protection mine dump (13.1 grams per tonne gold and 145 grams per tonne silver). This historic mine was operated intermittently between 1899 and 1973 and produced 10,719 ounces of gold, 82,824 ounces of silver and significant lead and zinc from 14,788 tonnes mined. The deposit consists of shear-hosted quartz veins mineralized with gold, pyrite, galena and sphalerite.
Two samples containing high gold values were collected from the California mine (8.4 and 3.8 grams per tonne gold). This historic mine operated intermittently between 1910 and 1947 and produced 2,258 ounces of gold, 3,942 ounces of silver and significant lead and zinc from 1,454 tonnes mined.
