The number of securities class-action lawsuits filed in the first half of 2021 has fallen considerably from the levels in the second half of 2020, according to a report released Wednesday by Cornerstone Research and the Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse.
Plaintiffs filed 112 securities class-action cases in federal and state courts in the first half of 2021, down 25% from the 150 cases filed in the second half of 2020, according to the report, Securities Class Action Filings 2021 Midyear Assessment. This marks the lowest number of filings since the first half of 2015.
The report attributed the decline in filing activity to a 66% drop in filings related to mergers and acquisitions compared with the second half of 2020. Of the cases filed in the first half of the year, only 12 were M&A filings. The number of federal and state court filings alleging claims under the Securities Act of 1933 also continued to decline. ....

Class action suit filed against pair of Metro Vancouver private schools over abuse allegations

VANCOUVER
Two Metro Vancouver private schools have been named in a lawsuit brought by a man who claims an attempted cover up of abuse allegations in Newfoundland led to several dangerous predators being transferred to schools in the Lower Mainland.
Darren Liptrot alleges he was physically and sexually abused by Brother Edward English while attending Vancouver College between 1981 and 1983.
Multiple children accused Edwards of abuse during his time at Newfoundland’s Mount Cashel Orphanage in the 1970s.
In 1991, a court convicted English of multiple charges related to physical and sexual abuse at Mount Cashel and he received a sentence of 10 years in prison. ....

The number of securities class-action lawsuits filed in 2020 dropped significantly from the record-setting levels in 2019, according to a report released Wednesday by Cornerstone Research and the Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse.
Plaintiffs filed 334 securities class-action cases in federal and state courts in 2020, a 22% reduction from the 427 cases filed in 2019. It was the first time since 2016 that plaintiffs filed complaints against fewer than 400 issuers in a year, according to the report, Securities Class Action Filings 2020 Year in Review.
The number of core filings those not focused on mergers and acquisitions fell 12% in 2020 to 234. Mergers and acquisitions filings were down to 100 in 2020 from 160 in the year prior. ....
